Các sợi SiO2 sinh học đã được tổng hợp với mô bông làm mẫu và với cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) làm chất hoạt động bề mặt thông qua quy trình sol-gel bề mặt. Các mẫu thu được giữ lại tốt hình dạng nguyên bản của bông và cho thấy lượng nanopore đồng nhất và lớn. Các hạt nano bạc đã được kết hợp thành công vào các nanopore thông qua quá trình ngấm và khử hóa học để hình thành sợi composite SiO2/Ag. Các hạt nano Ag có đường kính trung bình khoảng 3 nm có phân bố kích thước phù hợp với tính chất nanopore của ma trận SiO2.
