Việc sử dụng bộ lọc tĩnh mạch chủ dưới để ngăn ngừa thuyên tắc phổi đang gia tăng chủ yếu do các chỉ định dường như chưa được quy định và khuyến nghị rõ ràng. Bằng chứng hỗ trợ cho phương pháp này thường không đồng nhất và chủ yếu dựa vào các nghiên cứu quan sát và ý kiến đồng thuận, trong khi việc đặt bộ lọc IVC khiến bệnh nhân phải đối mặt với nguy cơ biến chứng và gia tăng chi phí chăm sóc sức khỏe. Do đó, một số chỉ định được đề xuất cho việc đặt bộ lọc IVC vẫn còn gây tranh cãi. Chúng tôi cố gắng xem xét các bằng chứng về hiệu quả và độ an toàn của bộ lọc IVC trong một số tình huống lâm sàng "đặc biệt", và đánh giá độ vững chắc của bằng chứng có sẵn cho bất kỳ chỉ định cụ thể nào để đặt bộ lọc IVC.
