Đã nghiên cứu sự phát quang điện hóa (ECL) của phức hợp ruthenium di(2,2′-bipyridine)-(4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline) (Ru-bipy-dpp) được hình thành trên điện cực carbon thủy tinh bằng phương pháp voltammetry chu kỳ. Sự oxy hóa anod của Ru-bipy-dpp tạo ra ECL trong sự hiện diện của oxalat trong dung dịch nước không có oxy. Hiệu suất ECL của Ru-bipy-dpp đạt gấp ba lần so với Ru(bipy)3 như một chuẩn. ECL của Ru-bipy-dpp bị làm giảm bởi cả oxy và phenol. Cường độ phát quang tỷ lệ thuận với nồng độ phenol trong khoảng 5–100 µM.
