Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) được sử dụng rộng rãi trong các thiết bị cấy ghép chỉnh hình, chẳng hạn như thiết bị hợp nhất cột sống, nhờ vào mô đun đàn hồi trung bình và độ bền cơ học tương đối cao. Khi dung dịch sol TiO2 bao gồm titanium isopropoxide, nước, ethanol và axit nitric được lắng đọng lên bề mặt PEEK mà không có bất kỳ xử lý trước nào, lớp gel TiO2 hình thành bị tách rời dễ dàng sau các xử lý tiếp theo. Tuy nhiên, khi cùng một dung dịch được lắng đọng lên PEEK đã được xử lý UV hoặc plasma O2 trước đó, lớp gel TiO2 lắng đọng bám chặt vào bề mặt ngay cả sau các xử lý tiếp theo. Sự bám dính mạnh mẽ được quy cho sự tương tác giữa các nhóm C–O, C=O và O–C=O trên PEEK do xử lý UV hoặc plasma O2 và liên kết Ti–O của lớp gel TiO2. Apatite không hình thành trên lớp gel TiO2 mới hình thành trong dung dịch dịch thể mô giả (SBF) ngay cả sau 3 ngày; tuy nhiên, apatite đã hình thành sau khi ngâm trong dung dịch HCl 0.1 M ở 80 °C trong 24 giờ. Sự hình thành apatite này được cho là do điện tích bề mặt dương của lớp gel TiO2 do xử lý axit tạo ra. PEEK với lớp phủ gel TiO2 được hình thành bởi quy trình đề xuất được dự kiến sẽ liên kết với xương sống, vì oxit titan mang điện tích dương, thúc đẩy sự hình thành apatite trong SBF trong một khoảng thời gian ngắn, được biết là có khả năng liên kết với xương sống.
