Kiến thức về giải phẫu và các biến thể giải phẫu là điều kiện tiên quyết cho việc diễn giải các phương pháp chẩn đoán hình ảnh. Nhờ vào việc ứng dụng chụp cộng hưởng từ (MRT), trong những năm qua đã có nhiều phát hiện mới về hình thái học của vùng vai, trong đó phần lớn các khía cạnh có liên quan lâm sàng được tổng hợp tại đây. Tầm quan trọng của chúng đối với các bệnh lý và hội chứng đau sẽ được thảo luận chi tiết hơn trong các chương tiếp theo.
