Bài báo này cung cấp một khảo sát về sự phát triển và đóng góp của mô hình dựa trên tác nhân cho phân tích kinh tế, mà không có tuyên bố nào về việc là đầy đủ. Quan điểm của chúng tôi được hình thành chủ yếu bởi các bài báo được trình bày tại hội nghị Wehia lần thứ 17, một số bài trong số đó được xuất bản trong số đặc biệt này. Bài báo cho thấy cách mà các mô hình dựa trên tác nhân đã phát triển và cách chúng cải thiện hiểu biết của chúng ta không chỉ về sự mất cân bằng vĩ mô mà còn về khả năng xuất hiện sự cân bằng trong những hệ thống thực tế như vậy. Nó cũng xem xét những tiến bộ đã đạt được trong việc hiểu biết về các thị trường thật, và liệt kê một số cải tiến cần thiết để thiết lập những mô hình này như là các công cụ thay thế cho các mô hình chính thống hiện tại.
