Xung đột hiện tại giữa yêu cầu kinh tế về việc kích thích tiêu dùng như một phần trong việc phổ biến các lý tưởng tân tự do về ưu thế người tiêu dùng và mối quan tâm ngày càng tăng về việc tăng cường bảo vệ môi trường tạo ra cơ hội để tập trung vào tiêu dùng liên quan đến hành vi đạo đức. Những mối quan tâm đạo đức về hành vi mua sắm và tiêu dùng được đề cập ở đây liên quan đến việc áp dụng các nguyên tắc liên quan đến sự tiết chế, được áp dụng vào việc tự kiềm chế trong việc mua sắm và tiêu thụ thực phẩm. Bài báo phác thảo các liên kết thần học với khái niệm tiết chế liên quan đến các mối quan tâm về môi trường và sức khỏe. Dựa trên góc nhìn về đạo đức phẩm hạnh, bài viết xem xét thái độ chủ động của con người đánh giá môi trường bằng cách áp dụng các hành vi giảm lãng phí. Kết quả nghiên cứu từ một cuộc khảo sát được thực hiện tại Romania mở rộng thông tin ít ỏi về hành vi lãng phí thực phẩm của con người liên quan đến tôn giáo, nhấn mạnh mối quan hệ giữa tôn giáo, hành vi hướng tới tiết chế và các mối quan tâm về môi trường.
