Sự phong phú và đa dạng của vi khuẩn trong tuyết tại sông băng Guoqu và sông băng Đông Rongbuk, nằm ở trung tâm và phía nam cao nguyên Tây Tạng, đã được nghiên cứu bằng cách sử dụng thư viện gen 16S rRNA và phương pháp tế bào chảy. Sự phong phú của vi khuẩn cho thấy sự biến đổi theo mùa với những mẫu hình khác nhau tại hai sông băng này. Sự phong phú vi khuẩn cao xảy ra trong mùa mưa tại sông băng Đông Rongbuk và trong mùa không mưa tại sông băng Guoqu. Sự biến đổi theo mùa trong sự phong phú này được gây ra bởi sự phát triển của vi khuẩn trong tuyết tại sông băng Đông Rongbuk, nhưng do nguồn vi khuẩn từ bụi tại sông băng Guoqu. Dưới ảnh hưởng của các luồng khí quyển và nhiệt độ khác nhau, sự đa dạng của vi khuẩn biến đổi theo mùa với các mức độ khác nhau. Sự biến đổi theo mùa trong sự đa dạng vi khuẩn rõ nét hơn tại sông băng Guoqu so với sông băng Đông Rongbuk. Đa dạng vi khuẩn tại hai sông băng thể hiện những phản ứng khác nhau đối với các điều kiện môi trường khác nhau. Nhiều vi khuẩn tại sông băng Guoqu liên kết với môi trường đất, trong khi nhiều vi khuẩn liên kết với môi trường biển xuất hiện tại sông băng Đông Rongbuk.
