Nghiên cứu này đề xuất một phân loại cho các công ty quản lý tài sản nhằm tạo điều kiện cho việc khái niệm hóa, phân loại và đo lường. Theo đó, nghiên cứu phân tích định tính về những biến thể trong các loại tài sản được chuyển giao cho các công ty quản lý tài sản, cơ chế định giá chuyển nhượng, và mức độ chuyển giao rủi ro. Nghiên cứu sử dụng bối cảnh so sánh giữa các quốc gia để phân tích sự khác biệt trong cấu trúc doanh nghiệp, thẩm quyền giải quyết, cấu trúc vốn, và tình trạng pháp lý của các công ty quản lý tài sản. Thông qua các minh họa trường hợp cụ thể của từng quốc gia, nghiên cứu thảo luận về những ưu điểm và nhược điểm của các đặc điểm phân loại khác nhau. Nghiên cứu phát triển một danh sách các tổ hợp đặc điểm thiết kế khả thi cho một công ty quản lý tài sản.
