Các xét nghiệm tự thực hiện, hay là những xét nghiệm trên vật liệu cơ thể để phát hiện các tình trạng y tế, hiện nay đã phổ biến rộng rãi cho công chúng. Tự xét nghiệm có các lợi ích cũng như nhược điểm, và tranh luận về việc nên khuyến khích hay ngăn cản việc tự xét nghiệm vẫn đang tiếp diễn. Một trong những lo ngại là liệu người tiêu dùng có đủ kiến thức để thực hiện thử nghiệm và diễn giải kết quả hay không. Một công cụ hỗ trợ quyết định (DA) trực tuyến với thông tin về tự xét nghiệm nói chung và thông tin cụ thể về tự xét nghiệm cholesterol và tiểu đường đã được phát triển. Công cụ DA này nhằm cung cấp thông tin khách quan về các xét nghiệm tự thực hiện cũng như một công cụ hỗ trợ quyết định để cân nhắc những lợi và hại của việc tự xét nghiệm. Mục tiêu của nghiên cứu này là đánh giá tác động của công cụ hỗ trợ quyết định trực tuyến đối với kiến thức về tự xét nghiệm, lựa chọn có thông tin, sự phân vân và các yếu tố tâm lý - xã hội. Đây là một thử nghiệm ngẫu nhiên đối chứng mù đơn trong đó công cụ hỗ trợ quyết định trực tuyến 'zelftestwijzer' được so sánh với thông tin ngắn gọn, không tương tác về tự xét nghiệm nói chung. Toàn bộ thử nghiệm sẽ được thực hiện trực tuyến. Người tham gia sẽ được chọn từ một bảng điều tra mạng hiện tại. Những người tiêu dùng đang cân nhắc sẽ thực hiện một xét nghiệm tự cholesterol hoặc tiểu đường trong tương lai sẽ được bao gồm trong nghiên cứu này. Các chỉ số kết quả sẽ được đánh giá ngay sau khi người tham gia đã xem công cụ DA hoặc điều kiện kiểm soát.
