Tác dụng chống ung thư của y học cổ truyền Trung Quốc (TCM) đã thu hút sự chú ý của công chúng so với các liệu pháp điều trị ung thư hiện có với nhiều tác dụng phụ khác nhau. Quả Lycium barbarum, thường được biết đến là Gou Qi Zi ở Trung Quốc, là một tác nhân/cách chữa hỗ trợ tiềm năng chống ung thư. Các thành phần hoạt tính chính của nó, polysaccharides L. barbarum (LBP), scopoletin và axit 2-O-β-d-glucopyranosyl-l-ascorbic (AA-2βG), đã được phát hiện có tác dụng làm chết tế bào và ức chế sự phát triển của các dòng tế bào ung thư. Hơn nữa, LBP cũng đóng góp vào tác dụng điều chỉnh miễn dịch của cơ thể và tăng cường hiệu quả của các liệu pháp điều trị ung thư khác. Chưa rõ liệu có bất kỳ tác dụng không mong muốn nào hay không. Các nghiên cứu thêm về cơ chế dược lý và độc tính của nó có thể hỗ trợ việc sử dụng an toàn loại thảo dược TCM này.
