A new Pliocene hominoid skull from Yuanmou southwest China

The central Yunnan plateau of southwest China has been a center for discoveries of late Miocene and early Pliocene hominoid fossils as well as Lower Pleistocene hominids since 1975. In addition to the discovery of important Pliocene fossils from Hudieliangzi and Zhupeng in 1987, a new skull was also added to the fossil inventory of the former locality. It is the purpose of this paper to make a free translation of the original preliminary fossil descriptions and conclusions which have just been published, with my own comments of their taxonomic assignment as concluding remarks. The geological setting and faunal list of Hudieliangzi are briefly described and general morphological comparisons with other Miocene hominoids from Eurasia and Pakistan.
