Bài báo này nhằm đóng góp vào tài liệu hiện có về nhận thức quy phạm bằng cách cung cấp một giải thích về tâm lý quy phạm xã hội của con người. Cách tiếp cận này dựa trên các lý thuyết về kiểm soát hành vi có mục đích trong tài liệu học tập củng cố và kiểm soát, lập luận rằng hình thức kiểm soát này định nghĩa một lớp trạng thái tinh thần quy phạm có ý định rất quan trọng, mang tính công cụ. Tôi bênh vực quan điểm rằng khả năng lý luận công cụ của loài vượn lớn và khả năng (hoặc nhóm khả năng) của chúng ta cho sự ý định chung đã cùng phát triển lẫn nhau và lập luận rằng sự tiến hóa của khả năng này đã cho phép sự đại diện của các quy phạm xã hội và sự xuất hiện của khả năng hướng dẫn quy phạm của chúng ta.
