Sự đô thị hóa nhanh chóng và phát triển kinh tế đã dẫn đến ô nhiễm chưa từng có ở toàn bộ sinh quyển. Các hệ sinh thái thủy sinh đã trở thành nơi tiếp nhận cho sự xả thải của nhiều chất ô nhiễm, bao gồm dưỡng chất, kim loại nặng, hợp chất hữu cơ bay hơi, hydrocarbon, thuốc trừ sâu, thuốc men, mầm bệnh và chất nổ. Sự tích tụ của những chất ô nhiễm này đặt ra mối đe dọa nghiêm trọng đến đa dạng sinh học thủy sinh, và việc uống nước nhiễm bẩn tiềm ẩn nguy cơ sức khỏe nghiêm trọng cho con người.
