Sự không chắc chắn trong điều trị mà nhiều tài liệu sớm về rối loạn nhân cách giới hạn (BPD) thường gặp đã nhường chỗ cho một cơ sở nghiên cứu đang gia tăng với những phát hiện chỉ ra tính hiệu quả của một số liệu pháp tâm lý. Bài viết này sẽ xem xét ba liệu pháp dựa trên bằng chứng chính cho BPD: liệu pháp hành vi biện chứng, liệu pháp tập trung vào khuôn mẫu và liệu pháp dựa trên hiểu biết tâm lý. Mặc dù không phải là một phương thuốc toàn diện, nhưng những liệu pháp này đã cung cấp, ở mức độ khác nhau, một mức độ bằng chứng hợp lý cho thấy tính hiệu quả trong điều trị. Cơ sở bằng chứng cho từng mô hình này được thảo luận cũng như các cơ chế thay đổi có thể xảy ra. Bài viết cũng nhấn mạnh sự tương đồng giữa các mô hình khác nhau cũng như các đặc điểm phân biệt các mô hình. Bài viết cho rằng việc tăng cường kỹ năng hiểu biết tâm lý có thể là một yếu tố chung cơ bản trong tất cả các liệu pháp cho người mắc BPD. Tác giả kết luận bằng cách thảo luận về những khó khăn và lợi ích tiềm năng của việc tích hợp trị liệu.
