Các lý thuyết về hệ thống gia đình đã xuất hiện trong 30 đến 40 năm qua chủ yếu thông qua các quan sát lâm sàng, dẫn đến những quan điểm đa dạng và không đồng nhất về cấu trúc gia đình, sự phát triển, động lực và bệnh lý; cũng như sự tách biệt khỏi những nghiên cứu nhóm nhỏ dựa trên thực nghiệm hơn.
