Nghiên cứu này nhằm đánh giá tỷ lệ và các yếu tố liên quan đến việc sử dụng thuốc lá ở những bệnh nhân sống chung với nhiễm HIV/HCV. Các kết quả tự báo cáo của bệnh nhân (PROs) đã được phân tích từ những bệnh nhân sống chung với nhiễm HIV/HCV (n = 313) đã đến khám và điều trị nhiễm HCV từ năm 2013 đến 2017 tại một Phòng Khám Nhiễm HIV/HCV của trường đại học. Tỷ lệ sử dụng thuốc lá ở những bệnh nhân sống chung với nhiễm HIV/HCV là 48%. So với những người không hút thuốc, một tỷ lệ cao hơn trong số những người sử dụng thuốc lá có rối loạn sử dụng chất. Trong phân tích đa biến, việc sử dụng rượu và chất cùng lúc có mối liên hệ tích cực với việc sử dụng thuốc lá. Các phát hiện gợi ý rằng cần có các can thiệp lâm sàng khẩn cấp để giảm việc sử dụng thuốc lá ở những bệnh nhân sống chung với nhiễm HIV/HCV - một nhóm dân số dễ bị tổn thương và có hệ miễn dịch suy yếu. Nếu không, những nỗ lực không thành công trong việc dành tài nguyên và các can thiệp hành vi cụ thể cho nhóm dân số này sẽ cản trở khả năng sống sót - đặc biệt khi xem xét đại dịch COVID-19 gần đây và đang phát triển.
