Efficient utilization of anion exchange composites using silica filler for low temperature alkaline membrane fuel cells

Alkaline membrane fuel cells (AMFCs) are advantageous over polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) in terms of electrode reaction kinetics and electrocatalyst versatility. One of the key materials for this type of fuel cell is anion exchange membrane (AEM). In this paper, we report on the fabrication of novel composite membrane from a quaternized tri-block copolymer and silica filler by solvent casting method and its application in alkaline membrane fuel cells. The fabricated membrane showed hydroxide conductivity up to 1.86 × 10−2 S cm−1 and a maximum AMFC power density of 182 mW cm−2 at a voltage of 0.77 V.
