The tensile strengths of Douglas fir and western red cedar roots growing in landslide-susceptible mountain soils in coastal British Columbia were measured in the laboratory. Tests on small roots, between 1 and 12 mm in diameter, sampled from living trees and from dead stumps cut at various times in the past, showed that Douglas fir and cedar roots rapidly lose their tensile strength after death of the parent tree. Within 3–5 years after felling of the parent tree small roots may lose over half their original tensile strength.
