Tóm tắt

The older adult population is growing. Limited numbers and access to trained geriatric psychiatrists hinder access to timely and appropriate geriatric mental health care, particularly in rural areas. Programs for All-Inclusive Care of the Elderly (PACE) provide person-centered care to nursing home-eligible community-dwelling elderly, in whom mental health conditions including dementia and depression are highly prevalent. However, access to mental health care across PACE programs remains an under-resourced need. Telepsychiatry, the exchange of health care-related information and delivery of psychiatric services using videoconferencing technology (VCT) from a distance is one vehicle to reduce this barrier. The Institute of Medicine has identified the importance of telehealth technologies to enhance access to and quality care for older adults, particularly those in rural areas of the USA. This report describes the development and implementation of a geriatric telepsychiatry consultation service between an academic medical center and a rural PACE program.
