The 1996 Safe Drinking Water Act amendments have changed the process by which unregulated contaminants are selected for regulation. The US Environmental Protection Agency is now required to publish a list of drinking water contaminants that, at the time of publication, are not subject to any proposed or promulgated national primary drinking water regulation (NPDWR). This list is known as the Drinking Water Contaminant Candidate List (DWCCL) and replaces the Drinking Water Priority List. This article discusses the criteria by which contaminants are included on the list, as well as what the timeframe is for finalization and for subsequent updates. A draft DWCCL is also provided.
