Solidification microporosity in directionally solidified multicomponent nickel aluminide

A systematic study is carried out to determine the microporosity evolution during directional solidification (DS) of multicomponent nickel aluminide. The solidification sequence of phase appearance is first discussed. Partitioning of the various sotutes is next described. Microstructural scales of the solidification microstructure are determined along with the volume fractions of intrinsic microporosity and the ordered phase ψ′ with changes in the imposed temperature gradient and growth velocity. The conditions for the lowest microporosity are determined. Microstructural correlations are provided to predict both volume fraction and size of the intrinsic microporosity as a function of the other microstructural scales and quantities that are estabhshed during DS. The correlations are shown to be self-consistent with solidification theory.
