Sự tiến bộ trong công nghệ thông tin đã gia tăng các ứng dụng thực tế và tiềm năng của thống kê bằng sáng chế như là những biện pháp thay thế cho các hoạt động đổi mới. Các đóng góp phân tích đã được đưa ra từ kinh tế học, thư mục học, và các so sánh mô tả phục vụ cho các mục đích chính sách. Chúng cho thấy những thành tựu hứa hẹn trong việc phân tích (1) các mẫu hoạt động đổi mới quốc tế và tác động của chúng đến thương mại và sản xuất; (2) các mẫu hoạt động đổi mới giữa các công ty, và tác động của chúng đến hiệu suất của công ty và cấu trúc ngành; (3) tỷ lệ và xu hướng các hoạt động đổi mới trong các lĩnh vực kỹ thuật và ngành công nghiệp khác nhau; (4) mối liên hệ giữa khoa học và công nghệ. Tuy nhiên, vẫn còn những thiên lệch hệ thống trong thống kê bằng sáng chế, việc đánh giá đầy đủ những thiên lệch này yêu cầu thêm nghiên cứu kinh tế học định lượng, phân loại và khảo sát.
