Sự thay đổi môi trường và khí hậu đã trở thành vấn đề được quan tâm toàn cầu một phần do khả năng của chúng trong việc làm gián đoạn các hoạt động liên quan đến sinh kế của con người. Tuy nhiên, những nỗi đau cảm xúc mà những thay đổi này gây ra và các yếu tố chịu trách nhiệm cho sự gắn bó địa điểm, đặc biệt là ở các nước toàn cầu phía Nam, đã nhận được rất ít sự chú ý cho đến nay. Bài báo này dựa trên các lý thuyết về ‘solastalgia’ – nỗi buồn do biến đổi môi trường và các cảm xúc mà nó gợi lên – và sự gắn bó địa điểm, phân tích những trải nghiệm thân thể của các thay đổi khí hậu và môi trường đối với các hộ gia đình nông thôn ở KwaMaye, KwaZulu-Natal, Nam Phi. Các phát hiện chỉ ra rằng, những thay đổi môi trường và khí hậu đã thể hiện dưới dạng gia tăng độ phì nhiêu của đất, xói mòn đất, sự xâm nhập của chuột và mối cũng như điều kiện hạn hán gia tăng, đã làm suy yếu khả năng sản xuất thực phẩm và tham gia vào sản xuất chăn nuôi của nông dân. Những hoàn cảnh này đã gợi lên sự thất vọng, gia tăng lo âu, nỗi buồn, giảm giá trị bản thân và sự vô giá trị cũng như cảm giác bất lực. Tuy nhiên, sự gắn bó địa điểm được củng cố bởi các mối quan hệ gia đình và di sản tổ tiên. Những vấn đề này đã được thảo luận trong bối cảnh các cuộc tranh luận lý thuyết rộng hơn xoay quanh solastalgia và sự gắn bó địa điểm.
