Determinants of efficiency in rice production of farmers in Viet Nam rural
Huynh Ngoc Chuong
Agriculture – rural – farmer is a crucial issue in Vietnam development policy. There are huge challenges in enhancing the efficiency of agriculture production. This paper focused on the estimation and determinants of rice production of Vietnam rural farmers. Based on VHLSS database in 2016, the author checked and manipulated 3299 observations which were surveyed all 6 regions in Vietnam. This paper uses the Data Envelopment Analysis approach (DEA) to estimate the score of production efficiency. The results showed that the score of  Vietnam rice production efficiency not good, mean at 8,95/100. Additionally, the author determined the effect of the factors on the efficiency score through the Tobit regression model. The model results reveal that labor and livelihood diversity effect on the efficiency of rice production of Vietnam rural farmers. Moreover, the difference in the geographical region and soci-economic characteristics also formalize the difference in production efficiency score among farmers in Vietnam.
Foreign innovation activities and CO2 emissions in Vietnam
Ly Khánh Đỗ, Minh Hoàng Nguyễn
Vietnam is an emerging economy, CO2 emissions are a topic of interest to scientists and the Government, and innovation plays a very important role in ensuring sustainable growth. The year 1987 marked the formalization of the inflow of foreign investment into the country, from which the foreign-invested economic sector played an important role in the economic development of Vietnam. However, along with the benefits from foreign investment, there are still some shortcomings and limitations that can cause damage to the environment through CO2 emissions. The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between foreign innovation and CO2 emissions in Vietnam in the period 1988-2018. Data in the study are collected from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the World Bank (World Bank), and website: https://countryeconom y.com/. The study uses a self-regression vector model (VAR) to analyze the relationship between foreign innovation and CO2 emissions. Research results show that there is a two-way relationship between foreign innovation activities and CO2 emissions in Vietnam. Based on research results, Vietnam needs to have appropriate policies to ensure the goal of reducing CO2 emissions, through policies to encourage innovation activities focusing on technological innovation using raw materials. Clean access, with little impact on the environment, thereby ensuring the goal of both growing and reducing CO2 emissions.
Some legal issues about credit cards in Vietnam - Compare with US law provisions
Thong Nguyen Phuoc Tran, Ngan Thi Thu Tran
Credit card service is a relatively special type of service. In essence, the specialness of this type of business is expressed in the fact that credit institutions have combined their two basic operations, including payment activities and credit granting activities into one type of service. The law about credit cards requires a smooth combination of the above provisions and constitutes a complete legal framework to regulate issues including the card business of credit institutions, credit card usage of customers, intermediary payment activities of card payment organizations. The initial research results show that risks in the credit card payment process are inevitable. In addition to the risks of technical and security factors, other risks involve legal risks for the obligation to ensure safety for credit card payment activities of entities related to this process. Hence, the identification of legal risks to clearly define the legal rights and obligations of related parties is a necessary study that contributes to the development of Vietnam's credit card market in the integration period. On the basis of comparing with the provisions of the law of the United States governing credit cards, the authors contend that this separate legal document for credit cards needs to be emphasized on important contents such as cardholders, credit card issuance and use contracts, the problems of clarification of responsibility to bear risks, interest rates and fees for the use of credit cards, credit limits, problems with consumer credit card abuse, and credit card fraud. These contents will be analyzed in detail to make recommendations with the aim of creating a complete legal framework in regulating credit card activities. Thereby we can take advantage of credit cards as well as minimize disadvantages from credit cards.
Impact of social capital on access to formal credits of shrimp households in the coastal districts of Ben Tre
Trinh Quoc Trung, Duong The Duy
The study was conducted in Ben Tre’s three coastal districts, namely Binh Dai, Ba Tri and Thanh Phu, with the aim to identify the structure and quality of social capital as well as its impact on the access to formal credits of 172 shrimp households. Using descriptive statistics, Logistic regression and multivariate regression, the results show that official social networks (i.e. associations and organizations), informal social networks (farming management, credit officers, family - . friends – colleagues), age, experience, number of years living in the locality and education level are determinants of the access to formal credits and credit amounts. In addition, the study also proposed a number of measures to expand the social capital and enhance the accessibility to formal credits of shrimp households.

The relation between academics’ research motivation and research productivity
Tran Thi Kim Dao, Nguyen Anh Tuan, Nguyen Vu Phuong, Hoang Thi Que Huong, Hoang Ngoc Hieu
In recent years, higher education institutions in Vietnam expect their academics to have more publications in prestigious journals to improve their ranking. Research motivation, both in the forms of intrinsic and extrinsic rewards, is viewed as an important factor driving academics to strive to do research. Examining the relation between academics’ research motivation and research productivity which is measured by the number of publications on international and local journals can offer an understanding of the impact of research motivation on research productivity. This relation is examined by a quantitative analysis of data obtained from a survey of 96 academics at the University of Economics and Law. The results show that intrinsic motivation exerts a stronger influence on the academics’ research productivity than extrinsic motivation. Another finding is that the academics with a doctoral degree are more productive in research than those with a master’s degree. Therefore, it is necessary to enhance both intrinsic motivation and sustain extrinsic motivation to promote the academics’ research productivity. As qualifications play an important role in enhancing the number of publications, providing academics with favorable conditions and encouraging them to achieve higher degrees is expected to boost their research productivity.

Hồ Xuân Thủy, Phạm Như Ngọc, Nguyễn Hồng Ngọc, Đinh Lê Minh Hiếu, Dzoãn Khoa Danh, Phạm Phú Thành Đạt
Profit maximization is an important goal of any business entities, lead to big concern about how to improve financial performance so as to run businesses in a stability and sustainability. Furthermore, in measuring financial performance, several profitability indicators are widely in use as return on assets (ROA), return on equity (ROE)... We did conduct literature reviews and conclude: evaluating the impact of factors on entity financial performance is such an essential topic which has drawn the attention of researchers all over the world and yet Vietnam. However, many studies gave dissimilar results, which indicates there might be differences in nature of the relationship, or factors affiliation in enterprises of different sectors or different countries. This study aims to determine the effect of factors on the financial performance of companies listed on the Hanoi Stock Exchange (HNX) from 2013-2017. The factors include corporate income tax, firms’size, growth of the firm, age of the firm and liquidity. The study used panel data methodology, the FEM model was found to be consistent with data. In this study, variables of return on assets (ROA) used to measure the financial performance of companies. The research revealed that corporate income tax, firms’size and growth of the firm show a significant negative relationship with financial performance. On the other hand, there is a significant positive relationship between liquidity and financial performance. But, the relationship between ROA with the firm age is not significant. Firms’ size and corporate income tax have the greatest influence on financial of companies. The findings of the study will improve the financial performance of companies listed on the HNX.
Applying topic model combined with Kohonen networks to discover and visualize communities on social networks
Ho Trung Thanh, Nguyen Quang Hung, Tran Duy Thanh
Users are members of communities on social networks. Users’ interested topics keep changing, resulting in the change of their communities’ interested topics as well. Level, period of time, and interested topics represent features of a community which (i) change upon preferences of each user on social networks for making friends or being interested in topics (based on message content); (ii) are formed or change from online groups of friends or the suggestions to make friends. Hence, the link of users in communities can be viewed as a network of users by their features in social network communities. In this paper, the author studies and proposes a new model for discovering communities using Temporal-Author-Recipient-Topic (TART) model combined with Kohonen neural networks to discover communities of users with the same interested topics over different periods of time. The research goal is achieved through testing models on two Vietnamese datasets (collected from social networks at universities and online newspapers).

Debt, Growth Opportunities and Investment of Listed Firms in Vietnam
Dang Van Tan, Huynh Thi Tuyen, Nguyen Thanh Liem, Tran Ly Hoang Quyen, Nguyen Duy Anh, Le Thi Thao Nhi
This study examines the simultaneous relationship between debt and debt maturity structure of firms with different growth opportunities. In addition, we analyze the effects of these factors on the investment of Vietnamese-listed firms in the period 2010-2020. Using the 3SLS regression model, the results show a negative relationship between debt and debt maturity structure, supporting the underinvestment hypothesis. However, when firms have higher growth opportunities, the relationship between the two factors turns positive, supporting the hypothesis of liquidity risk. The results of using the System GMM model to examine the impact of debt, debt maturity, and growth opportunities on investment further confirm the above findings. These findings have important implications for managers in making investment decisions.
