Physical examination revealed diffuse lichenification and scales involving the skin of the face, head and dorsum from the neck to the pelvis. The main histological alteration within the superficial and deep dermis was the presence of multiple large, spherical, thick walled, protozoal \u003Cjats:italic>Besnoitia\u003C\u002Fjats:italic> cysts. In addition, the inflammatory response consisted of a moderate, superficial and deep perivascular, mixed mononuclear cell infiltrate, with epidermal hyperplasia and compact orthokeratosis. Based upon the large size of the protozoal cysts and the ultrastructural features of the bradyzoites contained therein (conoid, polar ring, rhoptries, micronemes and microtubules), a diagnosis of cutaneous besnoitiosis was established. Treatment with trimethoprim‐sulphamethoxazole resulted in significant clinical improvement. For comparison, same parameters were evaluated in five unaffected pet cats. Additionally, all cats were evaluated by immunohistochemistry (IHC) for the presence of feline calicivirus (FCV) and feline herpes virus (FHV‐1) in acne lesions. The age of onset of acne in affected cats ranged from 6 months to 14 years with a median of 4 years. Lesions were characterized by black material adherent to the skin and hair, accompanied by erythema and variable degrees of excoriation. Concurrent ceruminous otitis externa was observed in 7 cases. Histopathological examination of skin biopsy specimens showed marked acanthosis with crusting, hydropic degeneration and dyskeratotic basal epithelial cells, a mixed diffuse superficial inflammatory infiltrate and sebaceous hyperplasia. \u003Cjats:italic>Malassezia pachydermatis\u003C\u002Fjats:italic> yeasts and various bacteria were isolated from the lesions in some of the cats but in no case was antimicrobial therapy curative. All the cats were otherwise healthy and those tested (16 out of 18) for feline leukaemia or feline immunodeficiency virus infections were all negative. At dermatological examination, multifocal alopecia, erythema, crusting and greasy adherent brownish scales were variably distributed on all cats. Cytological examination revealed \u003Cjats:italic>Malassezia\u003C\u002Fjats:italic> spp. overgrowth with\u002Fwithout bacterial infection in facial skin (\u003Cjats:italic>n\u003C\u002Fjats:italic> = 11), ventral neck (\u003Cjats:italic>n\u003C\u002Fjats:italic> = 6), abdomen (\u003Cjats:italic>n\u003C\u002Fjats:italic> = 6), ear canal (\u003Cjats:italic>n\u003C\u002Fjats:italic> = 4), chin (\u003Cjats:italic>n\u003C\u002Fjats:italic> = 2), ear pinnae (\u003Cjats:italic>n\u003C\u002Fjats:italic> = 2), interdigital (\u003Cjats:italic>n\u003C\u002Fjats:italic> = 1) and claw folds skin (\u003Cjats:italic>n\u003C\u002Fjats:italic> = 1). Moreover, in two cats \u003Cjats:italic>Malassezia pachydermatis\u003C\u002Fjats:italic> was isolated in fungal cultures from lesional skin. Azoles therapy alone was prescribed in seven, azoles and antibacterial therapy in eight and azoles with both antibacterial and anti‐inflammatory therapy in three of the cats. After 3–4 weeks of treatment, substantial reduction of pruritus and skin lesions was observed in all 11 cats treated with a combined therapy and in five of seven treated solely with azoles. \u003Cjats:italic>Malassezia\u003C\u002Fjats:italic> spp. overgrowth may represent a secondary cutaneous problem in allergic cats particularly in those presented for dermatological examination displaying greasy adherent brownish scales. The favourable response to treatment with antifungal treatments alone suggests that, as in dogs, \u003Cjats:italic>Malassezia \u003C\u002Fjats:italic>spp. may be partly responsible for both pruritus A Yorkshire terrier in the same household simultaneously developed pruritus due to scabies. This study evaluates the presence and importance of\u003Cjats:italic>Malassezia\u003C\u002Fjats:italic>spp. in feline biopsy specimens submitted for histopathological examination. Five hundred and fifty haematoxylin and eosin‐stained skin biopsy specimens received for histopathological examination between January 1999 and November 2000 were reviewed. Fifteen (2.7%) submissions contained\u003Cjats:italic>Malassezia\u003C\u002Fjats:italic>organisms in the stratum corneum of the epidermis or follicular infundibulum. Eleven of 15 cats presented with an acute onset of multifocal to generalized skin lesions. All 11 cats were euthanized or died within 2 months of the onset of clinical signs. Seven cats had dermatopathological changes and clinical signs supportive of paraneoplastic alopecia, and three cats had an interface dermatitis suggestive of erythema multiforme or thymoma‐associated dermatosis. Histopathological changes were nonspecific in one cat that was euthanized 2 weeks following onset of severe pruritus and alopecia. In three cats,\u003Cjats:italic>Malassezia\u003C\u002Fjats:italic>spp. were found in localized sites (two chin, one footpads) and appeared inconsequential to their overall health status. One cat had\u003Cjats:italic>Malassezia\u003C\u002Fjats:italic>spp. in association with cutaneous demodicosis. The aim of this study was to evaluate high‐IgE beagles epicutaneously sensitized to house dust mite (HDM) as a possible model for cAD. Six high‐IgE beagles were environmentally challenged with HDM using various doses and protocols. Similar challenge protocols were used in positive and negative control dogs: three dogs with naturally occurring cAD and positive intradermal skin test (IDT) to HDM and three normal dogs without history of skin disease and negative IDT to HDM. All high‐IgE beagles and all atopic dogs developed severe cutaneous lesions and pruritus after challenge. Lesions were erythematous papules and macules in contact areas such as face, ears, ventral abdomen, groin, axillae and feet. They were first visible after 6 h and increased in severity over time. No normal dog developed pruritus or lesions. Biopsies of representative lesions in the high‐IgE beagles were taken for histopathology and immunohistochemistry. There was superficial perivascular dermatitis with mononuclear infiltrates and spongiosis. Lymphocytes and eosinophils accumulated in small epidermal micro‐abscesses with hyperplasia of epidermal IgE‐bearing dendritic cells. These findings suggest that this colony of high‐IgE beagles develops a dermatitis that clinically, histopathologically and immunologically resembles the naturally occurring canine disease. The volumes of\u003Cjats:italic>Advances in Veterinary Dermatology\u003C\u002Fjats:italic>, the proceedings of ESVD\u002FECVD and AAVD\u002FACVD congresses were hand‐searched for studies relevant to this review. All articles and book chapters discussing treatment of\u003Cjats:italic>Malassezia\u003C\u002Fjats:italic>dermatitis were scanned for additional citations. Lastly, a request was sent to the Vetderm Listserv to share recent clinical trials. The analysis evaluated study design, methodology quality, subject enrolment quality, type of interventions and outcome measures.\u003C\u002Fjats:p>\u003Cjats:p>The searches identified 35 articles, and 14 trials that fulfilled the following selection criteria: (i)\u003Cjats:italic>in vivo\u003C\u002Fjats:italic>clinical trials, (ii) dogs showing clinical lesions of\u003Cjats:italic>Malassezia\u003C\u002Fjats:italic>dermatitis and (iii) enrolment of at least five dogs. Among these, only eight studies fulfilled the following additional criterion: (iv) prospective\u003Cjats:italic>in vivo\u003C\u002Fjats:italic>clinical trials reporting clinical and mycological outcome measures. The MR strain resistance pattern to other classes of antibiotics was also investigated. MRSA was resistant to the most classes of antibiotics, followed by MRSI, while MRSS maintained the most favourable susceptibility profile. MR staphylococci may pose a significant risk to animal and public health. 66 dogs of various races consulting the veterinary clinic for skin problems suspicious of atopic dermatitis, parallel skin tests with two commercial brands of allergens and serological tests with the CMG IMMUNODOT system and with an ELISA assay using monoclonal anti‐IgE antibodies were performed. The most frequent sensitivities found were towards house dust (44%) and storage mites (50%). Depending upon the cut‐off point chosen, the CMG IMMUNODOT test was shown to have sensitivity, in respect to the skin test, varying from 54 to 100%, in an inverse relationship to specificity. The ELISA assay was found to be slightly less sensitive. These investigations also revealed some major discrepancies in skin test results among allergen extracts of different origins, confirming that skin test results should no longer be considered as the sole ‘gold standard’ in diagnosis of IgE‐mediated allergy.
