The closest thing resembling a spatial policy is the outdated and unofficial European Spatial Development Perspective (ESDP). The inclusion of the term ‘territorial cohesion’ in the Reform Treaty has created new opportunities for proponents of European spatial planning. Despite wide political support for the concept, there is still little consensus on its actual meaning. The purpose of this paper is to take stock of this curious situation. This is done by raising some fundamental issues. Does a ‘planning subject’ and ‘planning object’ exist in Europe? What different interpretations of territorial cohesion are there, and what implications could this have? These issues are investigated further by means of a recent ESPON study which produced several policy‐oriented spatial scenarios. This study proposes and implemented four visual methods for analysing socio‐spatial isolation using graphic representation of people's social networks and activity patterns in space and time: 3D space‐time paths, time windows, 3D activity density surfaces, and ring‐based visualisation of social networks. These visualisations utilise both activity‐travel data and social network information. The data used were collected through a specially designed activity‐travel diary survey with a sample of Koreans in the Columbus metropolitan area in Ohio (USA). The results show that these visualisations can considerably enhance our understanding of the relationships between people's activities in space‐time and their social interactions. Policy‐makers therefore seek ways to curtail this form of private transport. Scientific research can help them attain this goal by identifying factors that influence travel behaviour. This paper examines the mobility of senior citizens with respect to various leisure activities, an area that has remained under‐exposed. The analysis shows that older people prefer to take the car for trips in their leisure time. If they own a vehicle, they tend to use it frequently, irrespective of where they live. Characteristics of the residential environment mainly influence the modal choice of seniors who do not have a car of their own. Following the rapid growth of logistics, the demand for distribution facilities increases significantly. As a consequence, logistics real estate markets have emerged, shaping local development practices. By establishing distri‐bution centres as single entities and integrated freight centres as agglomerations, they contribute to the formation of ‘regional distribution complexes’. The paper aims to exemplify this interrelation with two case studies in Berlin‐Brandenburg, Germany: first a publicly developed integrated freight centre, offering multi‐modal transport access and logistics services, and second a dispersed logistics site off the regional beltway, developed with respect to market requirements only. The paper finds that rising locational competition contributes to accelerated land consumption and further dispersal. Speculative development and outsourcing of facilities are ‘mobilising’ not only goods flows but also logistics infrastructure. Nonetheless, debate continues about the future of the Dutch countryside. In order to explore how Dutch inhabitants think about rural areas a survey was conducted by the authors, focusing on two topics: the kind of associations respondents to the survey have with respect to rural areas; and where they think rural areas are located in the Netherlands. The analysis shows that respondents’ representations of rurality are mainly formed along visual–figurative dimensions. It was also found that such representations of the rural differ by age of the respondents. Whereas seniors in general have more socio–cultural representations, young people see the countryside mainly as an agricultural production zone.\u003C\u002Fjats:p>\u003Cjats:p>With regard to the location of rural areas, respondents indicated that ‘genuine’ rural areas are to be found in the periphery of the country: the North. paper uses data from the Community Innovation Survey for Belgium to evaluate to what extent firms located in sectors and regions characterised by high employment concentration innovate more. We analyse the innovative performance of Belgian firms and relate it to agglomeration measures, as well as to a number of control variables. Our findings show a positive impact of localisation and urbanisation economies on firm‐level innovation output, lending support to the hypothesis that firms can benefit from their location within regions\u002Fsectors characterised by high employment concentration. In an analysis of low, medium, and high‐tech manufacturing and service industries, localisation economies are shown to improve firms' innovativeness only for low‐tech manufacturing and service sectors, while urbanisation externalities are shown to matter more for high‐tech service sectors. This study focuses on one important force that affects China's regional development: state investment in basic construction. With the exception of the Third Front period (1965‐71), the more developed eastern region always enjoyed a greater proportion of state investment than the central and western regions. Three major factors affected the temporal patterns of regional distribution of state investment in China: the ideological concern for spatial equality, defense considerations arising from perceived international threats, and die practical needs of die national economy. These factors exerted different influence on die investment patterns at different times. Whereas spatial equality and economic pragmatism were major concerns during the First Five‐Year Plan (1953‐57), national defense greatly affected the spatial patterns of state investment during the Third Front period, and these factors brought considerable state investment to die inland regions.
