This study investigated the seroprevalence of HBV and HCV in southern Taiwan. Screening programs were performed from September 1999 to August 2005 for community‐based surveillance of liver disease. A total of 28,797 adults from southern Taiwan, including Kaohsiung City (\u003Cjats:italic>n\u003C\u002Fjats:italic> = 14,036), Kaohsiung County (\u003Cjats:italic>n\u003C\u002Fjats:italic> = 7,713), and Pingtung County (\u003Cjats:italic>n\u003C\u002Fjats:italic> = 7,048) were participated. The mean age was 50.3 ± 14.6 years (range, 20‐97 years), with 41.0% were men. Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), antibody to HCV (anti‐HCV), and liver function tests were performed. Among the 28,797 adults, the prevalence of HBsAg(+) was 15.1% and that for anti‐HCV(+) was 8.6%. The seroprevalence of HBsAg in Kaohsiung County was 18.2%, which was higher than in Kaohsiung City (14.7%, \u003Cjats:italic>p\u003C\u002Fjats:italic> &lt; 0.001) or Pingtung County (12.5%, \u003Cjats:italic>p\u003C\u002Fjats:italic> &lt; 0.001). \u002F>\u003Cjats:p>Our aim was to evaluate the relationship between the success of methotrexate treatment and β‐hCG levels in progressive tubal ectopic pregnancies. We defined a retrospective cohort of 394 progressive tubal ectopic pregnancy patients treated with methotrexate. A single‐dose methotrexate protocol using 50 mg\u002Fm\u003Cjats:sup>2\u003C\u002Fjats:sup> was administered to patients with progressive tubal ectopic pregnancy. Surgery was performed in patients who exhibited signs of acute abdomen due to tubal rupture. Of 394 patients that received methotrexate treatment, 335 (84.6%) responded to medical treatment, while the remaining 59 (15.36%) underwent surgery due to treatment failure. β‐hCG levels in the failure group were significantly higher as compared with the success group at Day 1, Day 4, and Day 7 (2116 ± 3157 vs. 4178 ± 3422, 2062 ± 3551 vs. 4935 ± 4103, and 1532 ± 3007 vs. 3900 ± 4783, respectively). The receiver operating characteristics curve for β‐hCG levels at Day 1 was 0.738, with a cutoff value of 1418 mIU\u002FmL, while sensitivity and specificity values reached the optimum for treatment success (83.1% and 59.4%, respectively). all epithelial content in the tympanomastoid cavity. Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) is a 170 kd to 180 kd transmembrane glycoprotein and its distribution density is related to the ability of the keratinocytes to differentiate and their state of differentiation. We used the avidinbiotin complex technique and EGFR monoclonal antibody to evaluate the expression of EGFR in 29 cases of cholesteatoma and 34 samples of normal postauricular skin. Of patients with cholesteatoma, 79% (23 cases) had EGFR‐positive cells in the basal layer, 66% (19 cases) in the parabasal layer, and 62% (18 cases) in the upper layer of the epithelial tissue. Among patients with normal postauricular skin, 85% (29 cases) had EGFR‐positive cells in the basal layer, 79% (27 cases) in the parabasal layer, and 79% (27 cases) in the upper layer of the epithelial tissue. No statistical difference in EGFR expression between each layer of cholesteatoma and postauricular skin was noted. However, there was an intensity gradient of positive EGFR immunoreactivity from the basal to the higher layers in cholesteatoma. Our results showed that the distribution of EGFR in middle ear cholesteatoma is not deranged, but is similar to that in normal skin Although most patients with primary cutaneous SCC have an excellent prognosis, for those with metastatic disease, the long‐term prognosis is poor. The most common sites of metastasis are regional lymph nodes, lung, liver, brain, skin, and bone. However, metastatic soft tissue SCC from cutaneous lesions is extremely rare, with only two reported cases. We report a case in which the patient had a primary SCC lesion on his left palm in 1986. A second primary SCC on his left forearm was confirmed in 2001, with subsequent metastasis to the proximal muscles and bone invasion in spite of the initial wide The clinical manifestations and complications of scrub typhus vary and the illness ranges in severity from mild to fatal. The etiology of facial nerve palsy varies and infectious agents have been associated with this condition. \u003Cjats:italic>Rickettsiae\u003C\u002Fjats:italic> species have, however, rarely been reported as the causative agents. We report the case of a 49‐year‐old man who had fever, malaise, headache, oligouria and tea‐colored urine. Bilateral pneumonitis, acute renal failure, acalculous cholecystitis and aseptic meningitis were diagnosed after a series of examinations. The patient recovered after doxycycline treatment but he developed bilateral facial palsy during the convalescent phase, which improved after the administration of a steroid. \u002F>\u003Cjats:p>A recent hypothesis has revealed that low‐dose irradiation (LDI) with ionizing radiation might have a promoting effect on fracture healing. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of direct (electron beam) and indirect (gamma‐ray) low‐dose ionizing irradiations on the wound healing process in male rats. In 72 male rats, a full‐thickness wound was incised. The animals were randomly assigned to three groups, each with 24 rats. The first two groups were named IG–I and IG–II and respectively exposed to electron and gamma‐radiations (75 cGy) immediately after the surgical procedure. The third group was considered as the control (CG) and remained untreated. Skin biopsies from the subgroups were collected on days 3, 7, 15, and 21 after the operation and evaluated using histological and biomechanical methods. Data were analyzed by one‐way ANOVA, followed by Tukey's post hoc test using SPSS 20 software. Histological studies of tissues showed that the mean number of fibroblasts, macrophages, blood vessel sections, and neutrophils on the third and seventh days after the surgery in the gamma‐treated group was higher than that in both other groups. In contrast, on day 21, the mean number of mentioned cells in the gamma‐treated group was lower than in the other two groups. In addition, the mean maximum stress value was significantly greater in the gamma‐treated group. metabolic syndrome, however, not much research estimates the effect of PGBR extract on insulin resistance. The aim of this study is to examine the effects of PGBR extract in TNF‐α induced insulin resistance. HepG2 cells, hepatocytes, were cultured in DMEM medium and added with 5 μM insulin or with insulin and 30 ng\u002Fml TNF‐α or with insulin, TNF‐α and PGBR extract (50, 100, 300 μg\u002Fml). The glucose levels of the medium were decreased by insulin, demonstrating insulin promoted glucose uptake into cell. However, TNF‐α inhibited glucose uptake into cells treated with insulin. Moreover, insulin increased the protein expressions of AMP‐activated protein kinase (AMPK), insulin receptor substrate‐1 (IRS‐1), phosphatidylinositol‐3‐kinase‐α (PI3K‐α), serine\u002Fthreonine kinase PI3K‐linked protein kinase B (Akt\u002FPKB), glucose transporter‐2 (GLUT‐2), glucokinase (GCK), peroxisome proliferator activated receptor‐α (PPAR‐α) and PPAR‐γ. TNF‐α activated p65 and MAPKs (JNK1\u002F2 and ERK1\u002F2) which worsened the expressions of AMPK, IRS‐1, PI3K‐α, Akt\u002FPKB, GLUT‐2, GCK, glycogen synthase kinase‐3 (GSK‐3), PPAR‐α and PPAR‐γ. Once this relationship was established, we added PGBR extract to cell with insulin and TNF‐α. stressed rats would exibit abnormal levels of cortisol and a larger suppression of cortisol levels after the application of dexamethasone. Animals were divided in two groups: experimental and control groups. The experimental group was exposed to two types of stressors: acute immobilization stress, and combined predator stress and daily social stress with application of dexamethasone. Blood sampling was performed at three different times. We found statistically significant results after analyzing the differences between cortisol levels in different times of blood sampling in the group of animals exposed to stress with dexamethasone application. Statistical significance was found when we compared the experimental group with the control group in terms of elevated cortisol levels during blood sampling after stress paradigm exposition. Many significant disruptions in the functioning of the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis were observed, such as decrease in basal cortisol levels and enhanced dexamethasone‐induced inhibition of cortisol levels. These findings are important because their impact can translate to human individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder, which is the most important role of every animal model in study was to explore clinical features of renal infarction (RI) that may have a role in diagnosis and treatment in our patient cohort and provide data on midterm renal functions. Medical records of patients with diagnosis of acute RI, established by contrast enhanced computed tomography (CT) and at least 1 year follow‐up data, who were hospitalized in our clinic between 1998 and 2012 were retrospectively reviewed; including descriptive data, clinical signs and symptoms, etiologic factors, laboratory findings, and prescribed treatments. Fourteen patients (60.8%) with RI had atrial fibrillation (AF) as an etiologic factor of which four had concomitant mesenteric ischemia at diagnosis. At presentation, 20 patients (86.9%) had elevated serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), 18 patients (78.2%) had leukocytosis, and 16 patients (69.5%) had microscopic hematuria. Two patients with concomitant mesenteric ischemia and AF passed away during follow up. Mean eGFR was 70.8 ± 23.2 mL\u002Fmin\u002F1.73 m\u003Cjats:sup>2\u003C\u002Fjats:sup> at admission and increased to 82.3 ± 23.4 mL\u002Fmin\u002F1.73 m\u003Cjats:sup>2\u003C\u002Fjats:sup> at 1 year follow up. RI should be considered in patients with persistent flank or abdominal pain, particularly if they are at high risk of thromboembolism. We describe our experience of malignant mediastinal GCTs and compare the presentations and outcome with those of benign teratomas. Four malignant GCTs (1 seminoma, 1 choriocarcinoma, and 2 yolk‐sac tumors) have been treated in our hospital. All patients were men with obvious symptoms before diagnosis.
