Yet, understanding self-employment profiles and their spatial distribution may help understand differences in career progression of the self-employed. This study identifies and describes patterns in long-term career trajectories of the Dutch self-employed, and it explores spatial differences along the urban hierarchy. The study uses a life-course approach and register data of the whole population to find common patterns of careers among a sample of Dutch self-employed (N = 42,028) and their spatial distribution. We investigated careers through sequence and cluster analysis of individuals’ socio-economic statuses between 2003–2018. The analysis identifies 7 career clusters that collapse into three main career profiles: Mixed self-employment careers that combine self-employment with wage-employment, stable self-employment, and precarious self-employment. The clusters differ importantly in terms of the individual characteristics of the self-employed including age, gender, educational level and income. In terms of spatial distribution, the study shows that self-employment career profiles follow the urban hierarchy. Urban regions give way to all types of self-employment, while rural regions mainly exhibit stable self-employment. Precarious self-employment presents differently in urban and rural areas; in urban labor markets, we find self-employed individuals vulnerable to economic shocks, losing their jobs as a consequence of the financial crisis in 2007/08. In this study, the resulting description of seasonal patterns was evaluated using additional statistical techniques. Specifically, the X-11 Program's Test for Stable Seasonality (an analysis of variance) was extended through use of the Newman-Keuls Multiple Range Test. Also, a check was made to see if one of the necessary assumptions of the Test for Stable Seasonality was satisfied. The results indicated that the X-11 does an inadequate job for many San Diego County time series. Its implicit seasonal patterns do not coincide with those indicated by the range test. Further, the X-11 will “seasonally adjust” data even when its own test for stable seasonality indicates no seasonal behavior or when the test results are ambiguous due to a necessary assumption not being fulfilled. While not a seasonal adjustment procedure, the Newman-Keuls Multiple Range Test is a better way to describe seasonal patterns.
Seasonality in the San Diego economy
10.1007/BF01284990","https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/BF01284990",[549
"4f9fddd0-bcef-48c2-8f40-1dd28d9b2a7f",[470],[553
"9d64f8b6-fb7d-4ee7-ad67-4a8a7ec1fed3
"a9309d46-a779-43c8-b7b5-669c62f24cb3","2024-10-12T10:30:34.519+00:00",[],"San-Diego-State-University-United-States
San Diego State University United States
San Diego State University, USA
Arthur E. Vernon's classic 1950's study of the New York metropolitan area,Anatomy of a Metropolis. The analysis concentrates on trends in microelectronics manufacturing as the region's export base, new developments in the business service sector, the competition between San Francisco's downtown office sector and peripheral locations for office employment, and the changing character of the Bay Area households. Factors identified as important for forecasting development in the Bay Area to the end of the century include the competitive strategy of Silicon Valley manufacturers, the evolution of land-use controls in San Francisco and the suburban communities, and the probability of redevelopment in Oakland.
Metropolitan development in the San Francisco Bay Area
10.1007/BF01283650","https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/BF01283650",[815,834
"e656d876-d88f-46c0-9eed-34db1c7ce265",[470],[819
"5acb40b1-f97b-42b2-b758-8722b25da325
"aa40a52a-5b09-4aee-a9fc-967d757b02a0","2024-01-14T22:19:12.183+00:00",[
Department of Economics, University of California, Berkeley, United States
Department of Economics, University of California, Berkeley, USA
Darrell Hoerter
"9e2a6bd9-ef25-416d-85e2-0994246dde1b",[470],[838
"baf6a77d-1d55-4fc1-851b-ba8878c64b8e
[
"Michael Wiseman
[
[],[],[860,867
[
[78,79],[82,83,84,85
[
[99],[103,104
i10Index":23,"i10IndexLast5Year":23
"hindexLast5Year":23
},{"1967":110,"1968":111,"1969":112,"1970":111,"1971":110,"1972":113,"1973":60,"1974":114,"1975":115,"1976":116,"1977":113,"1978":117,"1979":110,"1980":118,"1981":118,"1982":113,"1983":110,"1984":118,"1985":118,"1986":119,"1987":119,"1988":120,"1989":110,"1990":118,"1991":60,"1992":121,"1993":118,"1994":120,"1995":121,"1996":118,"1997":122,"1998":113,"1999":116,"2000":121,"2001":123,"2002":114,"2003":117,"2004":124,"2005":125,"2006":126,"2007":127,"2008":128,"2009":129,"2010":130,"2011":126,"2012":131,"2013":112,"2014":132,"2015":132,"2016":131,"2017":133,"2018":60,"2019":126,"2020":134,"2021":126,"2022":135,"2023":125,"2024":136},{},{
"22
11-33","1988-11-01",1988
"de96af34-de75-405e-8b51-5c31e5759356","2024-01-27T11:52:55.051+00:00","2024-12-18T23:51:03.229+00:00",[],"Differences-in-spatial-pricing-in-the-United-States-A-statistical-analysis-and-case-studies
"Beckman, M. It identifies price strategies by statistical comparison of firms in Colorado with those located elsewhere in the United States. Competitive factors are found generally to dominate the pricing schedules of firms in other states, while the pricing schedules of Colorado firms are found to be influenced chiefly by demand patterns. Multi-product case examples are presented which spotlight pricing differences between firms located in a distributional-center type of state, such as Colorado, and those in other states. The cases also help explain why certain variables were uniquely important in Colorado.
Differences in spatial pricing in the United States: A statistical analysis and case studies
10.1007/BF01286470","2024-12-18T23:51:03.228+00:00","https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/BF01286470",[904,921,938
"eaa7bbaf-de43-46c5-9314-292d08f7f2b4",[470],[908
"48b56991-fc94-49d8-968a-8f733f0708d7","2024-01-05T18:00:31.400+00:00","2024-10-08T18:06:33.680+00:00",[],"West-Virginia-University-USA
West Virginia University USA
M. Given their assumption that labor demand conditions are invariant between regions and that the labor demand is highly wage elastic, they conclude that regional growth is primarily supply driven and differences in growth among regions arise due to differences in the growth of labor supply assuming that wage elasticity of labor supply is the same across regions. Muth (1968, 1971) claims to have verified the Borts and Steins (BS) conclusion. We propose a regional labor market based model of economic development similar to BS with certain modifications in assumptions and show that the Borts-Stein-Muth (BSM) conclusion is based upon a narrow view of labor demand and supply elasticities. Our theory demonstrates that regional development is mainly labor demand driven once we adopt a broader view of elasticities. The broader view incorporates the direct effect of wages on labor supply and labor demand as well as the indirect effects of wages through changes in inmigration and firms' formations in a region.
A labor market based theory of regional economic development
10.1007/s001680050130","https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s001680050130",[1003,1018
"ad601e35-7ab8-490d-9aa4-90e79103f61c",[470],[1007
"2b154b70-b916-472b-afaf-6b555d833640","2024-01-15T23:50:57.707+00:00",[
Department of Economics, Cleveland State University, Cleveland, OH 44115, USA, , US
Frank M. The method is analogous to a two-stage nested design in the analysis of variance (ANOVA). It considers the three-level hierarchical structure of a country: region-province-district, and decomposes overall regional inequality, as measured by Theil indices based on district-level mean incomes, into three components: the between-region, between-province, and within-province inequality components. The within-province component is a weighted-average of within-province income inequalities for each province, while the between-province component is a weighted-average of between-province income inequalities within each region. The method uses a district as the underlying regional unit to measure regional income inequality, rather than a province, and thus can analyze the contribution of within-province inequalities as well as between-province and between-region inequalities to the overall regional income inequality in a coherent framework. This paper applies the two-stage nested Theil decomposition method to district-level income and population data in China and Indonesia and explores factors determining regional income inequality in China and Indonesia.
Decomposing regional income inequality in China and Indonesia using two-stage nested Theil decomposition method
10.1007/s001680200107","2025-01-12T23:50:22.323+00:00","https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s001680200107",[1083
"0c324653-9b5f-4398-badc-db570d2885e6",[470],[1087
"e32fb79e-0912-4967-a3c7-c3b040f08811","2024-01-30T03:18:11.817+00:00",[
International Development Program, International University of Japan, Yamato-machi, Minami Uonuma-gun, Niigata, 949-7240, Japan (e-mail: akita@iuj.ac.jp), , JP
Takahiro Akita
[
[],[],[1109,1116
[
[78,79],[82,83,84,85
[
[99],[103,104
i10Index":23,"i10IndexLast5Year":23
"hindexLast5Year":23
},{"1967":110,"1968":111,"1969":112,"1970":111,"1971":110,"1972":113,"1973":60,"1974":114,"1975":115,"1976":116,"1977":113,"1978":117,"1979":110,"1980":118,"1981":118,"1982":113,"1983":110,"1984":118,"1985":118,"1986":119,"1987":119,"1988":120,"1989":110,"1990":118,"1991":60,"1992":121,"1993":118,"1994":120,"1995":121,"1996":118,"1997":122,"1998":113,"1999":116,"2000":121,"2001":123,"2002":114,"2003":117,"2004":124,"2005":125,"2006":126,"2007":127,"2008":128,"2009":129,"2010":130,"2011":126,"2012":131,"2013":112,"2014":132,"2015":132,"2016":131,"2017":133,"2018":60,"2019":126,"2020":134,"2021":126,"2022":135,"2023":125,"2024":136},{},{
"37
55-77","2003-02-01",2003]
