This is a prospective study which was carried out with institutional review board approval and written informed consent from the study subjects. Fifteen healthy volunteers (seven men, eight women; mean age, 31.2 years) underwent diffusion tensor imaging of the wrist. A single-shot spin-echo-based echo-planar imaging sequence (TR\u002FTE, 7000\u002F103 ms) was performed in each subject at eight different b values ranging from 325 to 1,550 s\u002Fmm2. Number and length of reconstructed fiber tracts, fiber density index (FDi), fractional anisotropy (FA), and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) were calculated for the median nerve. Signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) was also calculated for each acquisition. The overall image quality was assessed by two readers in consensus by ranking representative fiber tract images for each subject using a scale range from 1 to 8 (1 = best to 8 = worst image quality). Longest fibers were observed for b values between 675 and 1,025 s\u002Fmm2. Maximum FDi was found at b values of 1,025 s\u002Fmm2. FA was between 0.5 and 0.6 for all b values. ADC gradually decreased from 1.44 × 10−3 to 0.92 × 10−3 mm2\u002Fs with increasing b values. Nonetheless, VHs might also display an “atypical” appearance on MR imaging because of their histological features (amount of fat, vessels, and interstitial edema). Technical issues related to MRI are also addressed. A review of 6,774 consecutive cervical spine multidetector CT (MDCT) scans obtained during 6.2 years revealed 33 ankylosed spines studied for suspected acute cervical spine injury complicating AS. Of these, 20 patients also underwent MRI. On MRI, of these 20 patients, 19 had a total of 29 cervical and upper thoracic spine fractures. Of 20 transverse fractures traversing both anterior and posterior columns, 7 were transdiskal and exhibited less bone marrow edema than did those traversing vertebral bodies. MRI showed 2 fractures that were undetected by MDCT, and conversely, MDCT detected 6 fractures not seen on MRI; 16 patients had spinal cord findings ranging from impingement and contusion to complete transection. Magnetic resonance imaging can visualize unstable fractures of the cervical and upper thoracic spine. Paravertebral hemorrhages and any ligamentous injuries should alert radiologists to seek transverse fractures. Multiple fractures are common and often complicated by spinal cord injuries. order to evaluate ultrasonography in patients with suspected hip joint effusions, 123 consecutive patients were examined prospectively. Twenty healthy subjects were used as a control group. The normal sonoanatomy, the recommended scanning approach, and the diagnostic features of intra-articular joint effusions are presented. Even minor fluid collections of 1 or 2 ml could be accurately detected. Transient synovitis and fresh hemorrhagic effusions proved to be echofree, whereas clotted hemorrhagic collections or septic arthritis showed non-echofree effusions. Based on intraoperative and computed tomography (CT) data, ultrasonography is clearly superior to X-ray films in detecting joint effusions. A negative sonogram will exclude a fluid collection; the depiction of an echofree effusion with virtually rule out septic arthritis.
