This paper examines whether reviewing patent documents to avoid infringement can affect design creativity based on an experimental study involving 106 undergraduate engineering students. As part of the study, the participants were divided into three groups and asked to individually design a water kettle in 20 min. Participants from the first group were each given an identical patent document at the start of the experiment and were warned not to infringe the patented design. Participants from the second group were each given another patent document and the same warning. Participants from the third group were not given any patent documentation. The experiment results show that reviewing patent documents prior to ideation, even when done to avoid infringement, can fixate and lead to the inclusion of design features associated with the patent documents reviewed. In addition, reviewing patent documents can also cause distractions and result in the exclusion of design features that may otherwise be included. The findings of this work can contribute towards design pedagogy and the development of processes to handle patent documents in design projects.
Fixation and distraction in creative design: the repercussions of reviewing patent documents to avoid infringement
Aboukinane C, Moriasi DN, Kenimer AL, Dooley K, Linder J (2013) Fostering creativity in engineering education through experiential and team-based learning. In the delivery of the product, they aim to balance stability and variety in their product design and processes. The issue of engineering change plays an important in how they manage to do so. Our aim is to gain more understanding into how capital good firms manage engineering change, design variety and process variety, and into the role of the product delivery strategies they thereby use. Product delivery strategies are defined as the type of engineering work that is done independent of an order and the specification freedom the customer has in the remaining part of the design. Based on the within-case and cross-case analysis of two capital good firms several mechanisms for managing engineering change, design variety and process variety are distilled. It was found that there exist different ways of (1) managing generic design information, (2) isolating large engineering changes, (3) managing process variety, (4) designing and executing engineering change processes. Together with different product delivery strategies these mechanisms can be placed within an archetypes framework of engineering change management. On one side of the spectrum capital good firms operate according to open product delivery strategies, have some practices in place to investigate design reuse potential, isolate discontinuous engineering changes into the first deliveries of the product, employ ‘probe and learn’ process management principles in order to allow evolving insights to be accurately executed and have informal engineering change processes. On the other side of the spectrum capital good firms operate according to a closed product delivery strategy, focus on prevention of engineering changes based on design standards, need no isolation mechanisms for discontinuous engineering changes, have formal process management practices in place and make use of closed and formal engineering change procedures. The framework should help managers to (1) analyze existing configurations of product delivery strategies, product and process designs and engineering change management and (2) reconfigure any of these elements according to a ‘misfit’ derived from the framework. Since this is one of the few in-depth empirical studies into engineering change management in the capital good sector, our work adds to the understanding on the various ways in which engineering change can be dealt with.
Managing design variety, process variety and engineering change: a case study of two capital good firms
Acha V, Davies A, Hobday M, Salter A (2004) Exploring the capital goods economy: complex product systems in the UK. allocation affects product design, manufacturing, and quality. No existing technique has been found by the authors that takes product design, manufacturing, and quality into account simultaneously. This paper introduces a new concurrent engineering method for tolerance allocation. A nonlinear optimization model was constructed to implement the method. The model minimizes the combination of quality loss and manufacturing cost simultaneously in a single objective function by setting both process tolerances and design tolerances simultaneously. The purpose of the model is to balance manufacturing cost and quality loss to achieve near-optimal design and process tolerances simultaneously for minimum combined manufacturing cost and quality loss over the life of the product. Compared to other models, this model shows significant improvements.
Simultaneous tolerance synthesis for manufacturing and quality

10.1007/s00163-003-0029-1",[219],"https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00163-003-0029-1",[1242,1257
"4dc9d966-c1b1-440d-b8ad-a15ced7a0f08",[],[1246
"90262fa0-e59b-469f-9f05-8f8d7f743484
[
Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering, University of Windsor, Windsor, Canada",[
B. A unified feature-based representation of functional geometry and manufacturability has been developed to manipulate and evaluate part designs. Based on this information and production plans for multiple periods, an optimization-based method provides alternative part designs. The manufacturability of the part designs is quantitatively estimated by the facility cost of the manufacturing system best configured for a given part family and the average cycle time estimated by the discrete event simulation of production scenarios. Redesign suggestions are made on datum definitions of the original parts. Two case studies of a family of prismatic parts and that of turned parts are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.","https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00163-002-0018-9",[1394,1409
"44fe1637-e63e-453a-a675-e1e3b9a8d535",[1012],[1398
"f6583361-ed63-4a10-8926-479ce6d31fc3
[
University paper describes preliminary work toward the develoment of a framework and a system for modeling the “meta-physical” information of mechanical products. Meta-physical information is that information which describes the nature or reason for existence of objects in the physical product model. Such information includes product and feature functionality, design intent, relations, constraints and viewpoint-dependent definitions. This effort has resulted in an initial model structure and a prototype system. The product model consists of a meta-physical product model with attached physical product models containing, among other information, geometry, dimensions, tolerances, and features. The content and structure of the product model correspond directly to the information used and produced during the mechanical design process. The prototype system integrates a solid modeler, a feature modeler, a dimension and tolerance modeler, and a meta-physical modeler. This paper provides an overview of the meta-model structure, usage and potential.
A meta-model for mechanical products based upon the mechanical design process
Chen, A.; McGinnis, B.; Ullman, D. describe how aircraft are designed in a large organization. We discuss the different phases of design and interaction with the customer. We then describe the models used by each specialist department and the interactions among departments during the design process. We observe that the main design choices are refinement operations on the design. We then briefly describe how the negotiation process is controlled by an organizationally agreed sequence of commitment steps. We then describe negotiation at higher levels in the organization. What decisions are made, the compromises worked out, and the effect of these higher-level commitments on the design process. We conclude that: (1) aircraft design proceeds by thecooperation ofspecialists (specialist teams or departments); (2) each specialist has its ownmodel of the design, and may use several different models or partial models for different purposes; (3) specialists have limited ability to understand each other's models. They communicate using ashared vocabulary, but not necessarily shared technical knowledge; (4) design proceeds by successiverefinement of the models, which are coordinated and updated together; (5) the design decisions, which are acts of commitment and model refinement, arenegotiated by the specialists among themselves; (6) one way this negotiation process is organized and controlled is by the use ofcommitment steps; (7) negotiations occur at higher levels in the organization, resulting in commitments which greatly influence and constrain the design process and its organization, and which have the greatest effect on the cost of the product.
Cooperation in aircraft design
Duvvuru Sriram, Robert D. Determining how and to what extent certain characteristics or technical attributes (TAs) of products are to be met, with a view to gaining a higher level of overall customer satisfaction, is a key success factor in product design and development. An operational QFD planning problem with resource allocation is considered in this paper. The aim is to plan the attainment of TAs by allocating resources among the TAs with a view to achieving maximized overall customer satisfaction. Taking into account the technical and resource constraints, and the impact of the correlation among TAs, the operational QFD planning with resource allocation is formulated as a linear program and solved by a heuristics-combined Simplex Method. An overall procedure is presented to help a design team to implement this QFD design planning with resource allocation in practice. This model can bridge the gap and conflicts between the design targets at the strategic level, and resource allocations in the part deployment and operational process planning level.
Modelling of quality function deployment planning with resource allocation
Akao Y (1990) Quality function deployment: integrating customer requirements into product design.
