This work, however, is limited in that responses to specific stressors as they occurred were not assessed, thereby precluding investigation of resilience. The current research addressed this critical gap by directly testing the relationship between adversity history and resilience to stressors. Specifically, we used a multimethod approach across two studies to assess responses to controlled laboratory stressors (respectively requiring passive endurance and active instrumental performance). Results revealed hypothesized U-shaped relationships: Relative to a history of either no adversity or nonextreme high adversity, a moderate number of adverse life events was associated with less negative responses to pain and more positive psychophysiological responses while taking a test. These results provide novel evidence in support of adversity-derived propensity for resilience that generalizes across stressors.
An Upside to Adversity?
23673992
10.1177/0956797612469210","PUBLICATION","VERIFIED","Auto Verify",[106],"EN","https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/0956797612469210",[109,128,154,172,188
"3653530c-4ee8-455d-9a80-d11729a2bf32",[],[113
"1792657f-2aef-4dd6-9d87-bfd80eed87a6
[
#N# 1Department of Psychology, University at Buffalo, The State University of New York",[
"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-7368-2493
Mark D. In contrast, limited-item theories propose that the number of items that can be stored in working memory is strictly limited and cannot be increased by decreasing the quality of the representations. We tested these fundamentally different conceptualizations of working memory capacity by determining whether observers could trade quality for quantity in working memory when given incentives to do so. We found no evidence that observers could increase the number of representations by decreasing their quality in working memory, but observers could make such a trade-off at earlier processing stages. Our results show that the capacity limit of working memory is best characterized as a limit on the number of items that can be stored and not as a limit on a finely divisible resource that simultaneously determines the number and quality of the representations.
The Number and Quality of Representations in Working Memory
21987693
10.1177/0956797611417006",[106],"https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/0956797611417006",[400,421
"458075d8-f2a6-4b09-9793-a78c4f735974",[],[404
"0e26a254-2c86-4dcb-956e-0dd8be138527
[
UC-Davis Center for Mind & Brain, 267 Cousteau Place, Davis, CA 95618, USA. wwzhang@ucdavis.edu",[
"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-0431-5355
Weiwei Zhang
["IA0YX_gAAAAJ"]
A5100446735
"f841759e-c699-4583-8e7b-bfcdf83e7760",[],[425
"243b04fa-8eb6-44bf-993d-510ae5e7fef7
[
Center for Mind & Brain and Department of Psychology, University of California, Davis",[
"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-3725-1474
Steven J. Laboratory and field experiments revealed that implicitly activating the construct of time motivates individuals to spend more time with friends and family and less time working—behaviors that are associated with greater happiness. In contrast, implicitly activating money motivates individuals to work more and socialize less, which (although productive) does not increase happiness. Two experiments examined hemispheric differences in information processing that may contribute to solving insight problems. We propose that right-hemisphere (RH) coarse semantic coding is more likely than left-hemisphere (LH) fine semantic coding to activate distantly related information or unusual interpretations of words, and thus more likely to activate solution-relevant information for insight problems. In Experiment 1, after trying to solve insight problems, participants read aloud solution or unrelated target words presented to the left visual field (lvf) or right visual field (rvf). Participants showed greater lvf-RH than rvf-LH priming for solutions for solved problems and priming only in the lvf-RH for unsolved problems. In Experiment 2, participants showed an lvf-RH advantage for recognizing solutions to unsolved problems. These results demonstrate that in a problem-solving context, there was greater activation of solution-relevant information in the RH than in the LH. This activation is useful for recognizing, and perhaps producing, solutions to insight problems.
Getting the Right Idea: Semantic Activation in the Right Hemisphere May Help Solve Insight Problems
["14737050678862347437"]
10.1111/1467-9280.00082","2024-09-18T01:49:59.930+00:00",[106],"https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1111/1467-9280.00082",[1041,1060
"512e13ea-62c5-46fb-9242-f2e3b6c46f2f",[],[1045
"911ee87b-9ec3-4844-a56f-9a573ad3f32f
[
Section of Cognitive Neuroscience, Department of Neurological Sciences, Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center",[
"Edward M. Participants rated the naturalness of a variety of “natural” entities, before and after they were transformed by operations such as freezing, adding or removing components, mixing with other natural or unnatural entities, domestication, and genetic engineering. Results support four hypotheses. First, the principle of contagion accounts for many aspects of the reduction of naturalness by contact with unnatural entities. Second, chemical transformations reduce naturalness much more than physical transformations do. Third, the history of an entity's processing is more important in determining its naturalness than is the nature of the entity's contents. Fourth, mixing like natural entities (e.g., water from different sources) does not markedly reduce naturalness. The insertion of a gene from another species, the process used in producing genetically modified organisms, produces the biggest drop in naturalness; domestication, a human-accomplished activity that changes genotype and phenotype in major ways, is considered much less damaging to naturalness.
The Meaning of “Natural”
16102069
10.1111/j.1467-9280.2005.01589.x",[106],"https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1111/j.1467-9280.2005.01589.x",[1536
"a5f36572-79f3-4ca8-a432-1f91c9f93c5d",[],[1540
"52de3935-2972-4e58-ae69-bb091333f9ee
[
Department of Psychology, University of Pennsylvania, Philadephia, 19104, USA.",[
"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9985-6519
Paul Rozin
A5057929719
[
[1564
[
},[1569
[
],[1575,1582
[
[54,55],[58
[
[70],[74
"8
652-658
16",344
2005,{"2012":250,"2013":255,"2014":1600,"2015":254,"2016":1398,"2017":257,"2018":1400,"2019":1601,"2020":1401,"2021":258,"2022":1601,"2023":1410,"2024":1601},21,27,"2005-08-01","2025-09-13T22:56:03.248+00:00",[54,75],[1606,1609,1612,1615,1618,1621,1624,1627,1630,1633,1636,1639,1642,1645,1648
"10.1006/appe.1999.0267
"10.1023/A:1007331524432
"10.1108/00070709510100118
"10.1126/science.285.5426.384
"Kellert S.R., 1993, The biophilia hypothesis",{
"10.1525/eth.1994.22.2.02a00020
"10.1017/CBO9780511571381.002
"Rozin P., Fischler C., Shields C. We recently had a unique opportunity to investigate this issue when we met three congenitally blind individuals in India. After providing them treatment, we studied the early stages of their visual skills. We found that prominent figural cues of grouping, such as good continuation and junction structure, were largely ineffective for image parsing. By contrast, motion cues were of profound significance in that they enabled intraobject integration and facilitated the development of object representations that permitted recognition in static images. Following 10 to 18 months of visual experience, the individuals' performance improved, and they were able to use the previously ineffective static figural cues to correctly parse many static scenes. These results suggest that motion information plays a fundamental role in organizing early visual experience and that parsing skills can be acquired even late in life.
Visual Parsing After Recovery From Blindness
19891751
10.1111/j.1467-9280.2009.02471.x",[106],"https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1111/j.1467-9280.2009.02471.x",[1895,1914,1931,1950,1967
"f75ebbe7-39f4-4955-9402-5c49b6a2345f",[],[1899
"62a05d17-2866-49d7-8009-4889d661afe1
[
Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences, Massachusetts Institute of Technology",[
"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7367-6111
Yuri Ostrovsky
A5008770046
"0fd640d6-de80-4de4-a6fe-baf237a6956a",[],[1918
[
https://orcid.org/0000-0001-5088-6098
Ethan M. However, prior work has not delineated their relative contributions. In a sample of 20 females, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging to compare the neural correlates of negative emotions generated by the bottom-up perception of aversive images and by the top-down interpretation of neutral images as aversive. We found that (a) both types of responses activated the amygdala, although bottom-up responses did so more strongly; (b) bottom-up responses activated systems for attending to and encoding perceptual and affective stimulus properties, whereas top-down responses activated prefrontal regions that represent high-level cognitive interpretations; and (c) self-reported affect correlated with activity in the amygdala during bottom-up responding and with activity in the medial prefrontal cortex during top-down responding. These findings provide a neural foundation for emotion theories that posit multiple kinds of appraisal processes and help to clarify mechanisms underlying clinically relevant forms of emotion dysregulation.
Bottom-Up and Top-Down Processes in Emotion Generation
19883494
10.1111/j.1467-9280.2009.02459.x",[106],"https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1111/j.1467-9280.2009.02459.x",[2179,2198,2215,2234,2259,2280,2298,2315
"9867c0a0-85d9-4b1e-8dcf-b061d912a30a",[],[2183
"b419f1d4-6c2a-4459-868e-ff0162972b49
[
Department of Psychology, Columbia University, New York, NY 10027, USA",[
"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-8532-2129
Kevin N.
