The metal ion intake was dependent on the extent of crosslinking and followed the order: Hg(II)>Cu(II)>Zn(II)>Ni(II)>Co(II). The aminopolyacrylamides and their metal complexes were characterised by IR and EPR techniques. The absorptions of the ligands were shifted by complexation with metal ions and the EPR spectrum suggested distorted tetragonal geometry for the Cu(II) complex. The thermogravimetric analysis of the metal complexes revealed a pattern of variation of thermal stability on incorporation of metal ions. The elemental analyses of the complexes show that the metal: ligand ratio is 1:2. The electrical conductance in acetone shows the non-electrolytic nature of the complexes. The diamagnetic character suggests a gross square-planar geometry for the palladium (II) complexes. Copper (II) complexes are paramagnetic with¼eff.∼1·90 B.M. Spectral data suggest that in all the complexes the ligand coordinates to the metal (II) symmetrically through isonitroso-nitrogen and imine-nitrogen, forming a five membered chelate ring. Four complexes were identified for zinc and copper with the overall stability constants 25, 125, 490 and 1380 and 100, 3.3 × 103, 9.6 × 103 and 1.6 × 104 respectively while three complexes were observed for lead with the stability constants 18, 215 and 294. In the case of indium, the reduction of the ‘simple’ ion is irreversible and that of the complex is reversible and hence the system was studied by the method of Momoki and Ogawa. DOPC vesicles were prepared by the injection method on a hydrophobic substrate using 1-octadecanethiol (ODT) self-assembled on a gold-coated AT-cut quartz. The reflection spectrometry measurements of the adsorbed vesicles showed nearly monolayer formation in few cases, while in most other experiments, the frequency changes measured suggested multilayer formation assuming the usual Sauerbrey equation to hold in the present system as well. Presence of NaCl, KCl, Na2SO4 and ethanol in the aqueous phase during the formation of vesicles suggest that the multilayer formation can be hastened in some cases.
