The technological relevance of this large‐scale market for polymers is evidenced by the numerous patents issued over the last few years, even though only few applications have entered the market. Polymer‐clay nanocomposite systems were successfully prepared by melt compounding using several thermoplastic matrices (polyamides, polyolefins, etc.), but few data are reported in the scientific literature on polyester‐based nanocomposites (2). Because of the high commercial relevance of polyesters, we have investigated the effect of organoclay inclusion on the structure and properties of these hybrid systems. In particular, we have studied the relationships between processing conditions, hybrid composition (organoclay type and content), nanoscale morphology and properties of poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) nanocomposites based upon several commercial organo‐modified montmorillonites at different weight percentages. Binary blends have been prepared by both solution and melt‐mixed methods to determine the effect of melt‐processing on blend compatibility. The effect of the sulfonate group and counterion type on compatibility was evaluated by blending sulfonated and nonsulfonated forms of the amorphous polyester ionomer with both nylon 6,6 and poly(ethylene terephthalate). The melting point and phase behavior of the blends were determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM), respectively. A comparison of the melting behavior between the melt and solution blends suggests compatibility due to specific interactions for the ionomer\u002Fnylon 6,6 blends, and transesterification for the ionomer\u002Fpoly(ethylene terephthalate) blends. For the former systems, practical adhesion (as determined experimentally, for example, by peel, tensile, or shear strengths) is a function of basic adhesion (determined by intermolecular, interactions such as van der Waals, electrostatic, or valence type forces) and many other factors. Adhesive joint strength depends pends upon the mechanical response of the various phases involved; however, the data in the literature on such strengths suggest the importance of surface chemical and energetic factors. Various such criteria, including, wetting, thermodynamic work of adhesion \u003Cjats:italic>W\u003C\u002Fjats:italic>\u003Cjats:sub>A\u003C\u002Fjats:sub>, and interfacial tension, \u003Cjats:italic>y\u003C\u002Fjats:italic>\u003Cjats:sub>SL\u003C\u002Fjats:sub>, for maximum joint strengths and the conditions which optimize these criteria are discussed. The testing of these factors against the literature data on adhesive joint strengths shows that the interfacial tension between the substrate and the adhesive (\u003Cjats:italic>y\u003C\u002Fjats:italic>\u003Cjats:sub>sL\u003C\u002Fjats:sub>) is the most important criterion; the lower the \u003Cjats:italic>y\u003C\u002Fjats:italic>\u003Cjats:sub>SL\u003C\u002Fjats:sub>, the higher the joint strength. In the case of adherend‐adherate systems, (e.g., metallized polymers), basic adhesion can be improved by chemical bonding or electrostatic contributions, and this improvement may or may not be reflected in improved practical adhesion. Examples are cited where an increase in basic adhesion does culminate in improved practical adhesion. The main role of the molding variables may be related to their effects on the cure time and temperature and on the flow and thermal phenomena that affect orientation and residual stresses. These effects are manifested in the ultimate mechanical properties and shrinkage of the molded articles. Only scattered empirical data are available on the effects of material parameters, like the basic kinetic, thermal, rheological, and pressure‐volume‐temperature properties of thermosetting compounds. The lack of useful information in this area may be related to the unavailability of sufficient, satisfactory data on the above properties. This situation has also resulted in limitations on meaningful work towards the mathematical modelling of the molding process, which would be useful for the optimization of production rates and product quality. It was established that the isothermal kinetic analysis through the isoconversional adjustment ln\u003Cjats:italic>t\u003C\u002Fjats:italic> = A + E\u002FRT is the method that offers the most accurate results for unsaturated polyester resin cure kinetics. From this comparative study it was noted that the activation energy not only varies according to the degree of conversion but also according to the method used to evaluate the kinetic parameters. Furthermore, it was shown that the activation energy cannot be separated from the other adjustment parameters, so the different kinetic procedures used are not generally comparable. Different methods of evaluating the degrees of conversion α and the reaction rates \u003Cjats:italic>d\u003C\u002Fjats:italic>α\u002F\u003Cjats:italic>dt\u003C\u002Fjats:italic> according to the experimental reaction heat were also studied. The experimental basis for two equations under uniaxial loading and the influence of environmental factors on the properties are first examined. It is then shown that creep and recovery data can be conveiently used to evaluate properties in one equation, while two‐step relaxation data serve the same purpose for the second equation. Methods of reducing data to accomplish this characterization and to determine the accuracy of the theory are illustrated using existing data on nitrocellulose film, fiber‐reinforced phenolic resin, and polyisobutylene. In this study, polymer blends and nanofiber composites were compounded using a total of approximately 2 grams per sample. This mixer has a unique, asymmetric design consisting of a varying clearance between the rotor blade tips and the cup wall, enabling the material to be squeezed, stretched and kneaded in high shear and converging zones. Unlike the few other miniature mixing devices that are commercially available, the APAM has a combination of good mixing capability and complex flow modes required for dispersive flow, and requires minimal sample mass. In this work, the final morphology of non‐reactive blends created in the APAM was similar to that obtained in an internal mixer and in a twin‐screw extruder, and was much finer than that obtained in a MiniMAX™ mixer. The final morphology in reactive blends was comparable for all the mixers. The dispersion of nanofibers is uniform for the nanocomposites blended in the APAM and comparable to the dispersion obtained in the internal batch mixer, whereas for the MiniMAX™, the nanofibers remained in bundles and were not wetted by the matrix polymer. This work studied the addition of a rigid bio‐based and biodegradable polymer, poly(lactic acid) (PLA), along with organically modified silicate layers as a conceivable means to improve the modulus of PBAT. Blending with PLA would also reduce both the cost of the ultimate blend and its dependence on nonrenewable resources. Compounds of PBAT with PLA and organically modified silicate layers showed significantly improved tensile and flexural strength resulting in enhanced thermomechanical performances compared to neat PBAT. The state of clay dispersion was evaluated using common analytical techniques such as transmission electron microscopy, X‐ray diffraction, and rheometry. The clay platelets were partially dispersed in a PBAT and PLA phase and a large portion of the platelets were located at the interface. The incorporation of organoclay reduced the dispersed phase domain (i.e., PLA) size significantly. The smaller PLA size however, did not translate into better elongational properties. POLYM. ENG.
