Although virtual patients have been around for some time they have yet to become part of mainstream medical education. A major reason for this would seem to be a lack of clarity as to what educational value virtual patients actually have. This paper argues that virtual patients should be seen as activities rather than artifacts and that activity theory can be used to generate different ways to frame scholarship in and around virtual patients. Drawing on the work of Leont’ev and Engeström this paper describes a range of perspectives based on the operations, actions, and objectives in and around virtual patients; the use of virtual patients to mediate activities; and the sociocultural context and the participants in virtual patient activities. This approach allows us to move beyond the ‘does or does not work’ discourse of much of the existing scholarship around virtual patients and, to an extent, around educational technologies as a whole. Activity perspectives, and activity theory in particular, offer new horizons for research and evaluation that address many of the limitations of intervention-based paradigms of inquiry.
Virtual patients as activities: exploring the research implications of an activity theoretical stance
10.1007/s40037-014-0134-z","PUBLICATION","VERIFIED","Auto Verify","https://pmejournal.org/articles/10.1007/S40037-014-0134-Z",[155
"b3f2956e-56a0-4fbf-9398-545030528e85",[158],"AUTHOR",[160
"2ec8438e-b359-493d-9709-6e9136a746be","2024-01-02T02:53:48.179+00:00",[
Northern Ontario School of Medicine, Sudbury, Canada
Rachel H. In this interpretive study, the authors recruited 16 senior medical students from two classes at a Norwegian medical school. In three focus group interviews, participants were invited to reflect on their experiences of shame. The data were analyzed using systematic text condensation, producing rich descriptions about students’ shame experiences. All participants had a range of shame experiences, with strong emotional, physical, and cognitive reactions. Shame was triggered by a range of clinician behaviours interpreted as disinterest, disrespect, humiliation, or breaches of professionalism. Shame during clinical training caused loss of confidence and motivation, worries about professional competence, lack of engagement in learning, and distancing from shame-associated specialties. No positive effects of shame were reported. Shame reactions in medical students were triggered by clinician behaviour that left students feeling unwanted, rejected, or burdensome, and by humiliating teaching situations. Shame had deleterious effects on motivation, learning, and professional identity development. This study has implications for learners, educators, and clinicians, and it may contribute to increased understanding of the importance of supportive learning environments and supervisors’ social skills within the context of medical education.
Shame in medical clerkship: “You just feel like dirt under someone’s Researchers have an obligation to the academic community to present complete and honest limitations of a presented study. Too often, authors use generic descriptions to describe study limitations. Including redundant or irrelevant limitations is an ineffective use of the already limited word count. A meaningful presentation of study limitations should describe the potential limitation, explain the implication of the limitation, provide possible alternative approaches, and describe steps taken to mitigate the limitation. LearnENT is an internationally recognized otolaryngology-head and neck surgery (OHNS) smartphone app and website designed for medical trainees to learn about OHNS. However, upon the initial launch of the app, there was a lack of medical student awareness and engagement. In this article, we highlight the process and lessons learned from developing an ambassador program to increase the national presence and uptake of LearnENT. Medical students from across Canada were recruited and trained to promote the app at their respective institutions. Ambassadors hosted events and spearheaded initiatives around the country with the goal of showcasing LearnENT. Furthermore, ambassadors were engaged in scholarly initiatives such as creating educational content for LearnENT and giving presentations at national conferences. Critical factors in the success of a student-led ambassador program include ensuring widespread dissemination of the program, establishing clear expectations for ambassadors, equipping ambassadors with standardized promotional material, and promoting collaboration to collectively work towards addressing challenges. When creating a national student-led group such as an ambassador program, outreach to senior stakeholders can be an effective way to involve students at different institutions, provide mentorship opportunities for students and provide opportunities for educational scholarship. With new medical education innovations constantly surfacing, the LearnENT ambassador program model can be applied in other contexts to increase awareness of medical education Our review aims to specify gender-related speciality preferences during medical education. A literature search on gender differences in medical students’ speciality preferences was conducted in PubMed, Eric, Embase and Social Abstracts, and reference lists from January 2000 to June 2013. Study quality was assessed by critical appraisal. Our search yielded 741 hits and included 14, mostly cross-sectional, studies originating from various countries. No cohort studies were found. Throughout medical education, surgery is predominantly preferred by men and gynaecology, paediatrics and general practice by women. Internal medicine was pursued by both genders. The extent of gender-specific speciality preferences seemed related to the male-to-female ratio in the study population. When a population contained more male students gynaecology seemed even more preferred by women, while in a more feminine population, men more highly preferred surgery. Internationally, throughout medical education, gender-related speciality preferences are apparent. The extent might be influenced by the male-to-female ratio of a study population. Further research of the role of gender in career considerations of medical students on the future workforce is necessary.
Gendered specialities during medical education: a literature review
10.1007/s40037-014-0132-1","https://pmejournal.org/articles/10.1007/S40037-014-0132-1",[594,609,621,633
"a6ebf0a4-6dbd-4ce9-b863-8f74f608b4b3",[158],[598
"67c75b62-2335-42a7-a93b-6bfc0830e8c4","2024-01-24T19:12:29.820+00:00",[
Unit Gender and Women’s Health, Department of Primary and Community Care, Radboud University Medical Centre, Nijmegen, the Netherlands
Antoine Lagro-Janssen
"ede2096d-c262-4011-994a-ca2698b88b77",[158],[613
[
"Margret Alers
"53268a3f-cb5c-414d-9a5d-269a6310f71b",[158],[625
[
"Patrick Dielissen
"00d06cf6-6c7e-4dab-856a-d1d4eac42cf0",[158],[637
[
"Lotte van Leerdam
[
[],[],[656,663
[
[99],[103,104
[
[80,81],[84,85
i10Index":110,"i10IndexLast5Year":23
"hindexLast5Year":115
2018":108,"2019":109},{"2012":113,"2013":114,"2014":115,"2015":116,"2016":117,"2017":118,"2018":119,"2019":120,"2020":121,"2021":122,"2022":123},{"2017":126},{"2017":129
"163-178","2014-07-01
"9bf08961-fbc1-4a60-b85b-5a1f3cf423bd","2023-12-11T23:36:10.931+00:00",[
"Emanuel EJ. Rotterdam: Brill Sense; 2009. pp. 111–26.
Qualitative inquiry is increasingly popular in health professions education, and there has been a move to solidify processes of analysis to demystify the practice and increase rigour. Whilst important, being bound too heavily by methodological processes potentially represses the imaginative creativity of qualitative expression and interpretation—traditional cornerstones of the approach. Rigid adherence to analytic steps risks leaving no time or space for moments of ‘wonder’ or emotional responses which facilitate rich engagement. Poetic inquiry, defined as research which uses poetry ‘as, in, [or] for inquiry’, offers ways to encourage creativity and deep engagement with qualitative data within health professions education. Poetic inquiry attends carefully to participant language, can deepen researcher reflexivity, may increase the emotive impact of research, and promotes an efficiency of qualitative expression through the use of ‘razor sharp’ language. This A Qualitative Space paper introduces the approach by outlining how it may be applied to inquiry within health professions education. Approaches to engaging with poetic inquiry are discussed and illustrated using examples from the field’s scholarship. Finally, recommendations for interested researchers on how to engage with poetic inquiry are made, including suggestions as to how to poetize existing qualitative research practices.
Thoughts that breathe, and words that burn: poetic inquiry within health professions education
10.1007/s40037-021-00682-9","https://pmejournal.org/articles/10.1007/S40037-021-00682-9",[827,844,869
"b1ecffe0-da95-4887-a057-42b174662503",[158],[831
"93dbec27-0486-4a05-b643-65888a2cedbc","2024-01-13T23:53:13.553+00:00","2024-12-23T11:52:14.717+00:00",[],"Department-of-Family-Medicine-Cumming-School-of-Medicine-University-of-Calgary-Alberta-Canada
Department of Family Medicine, Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada
Martina Kelly
"6ca15bb1-c1e4-4223-898a-4f2bc39b3297",[158],[848,858
"598f0868-574a-4b04-b1e9-46529b1cf794
"e552108f-c6d7-4e9b-9a6d-d133a1c1d3c3","2024-02-13T20:59:23.058+00:00",[
Medical Education Innovation and Research Centre, Imperial College London, London, UK",{
"c3a08469-f890-4799-aed4-6dbc973b093d","2023-12-20T09:08:21.203+00:00",[
Health Professions Education Unit, Hull York Medical School, University of York, York, UK
Megan E.
