It traces influences on the theory of translation and on how translation was perceived from Cicero and Horace to Alfred, and it concentrates on the prefatory material and translation practice employed in Wærferth’s Old English Dialogues and the Alfredian versions of the Cura Pastoralis, the De Consolatione Philosophiae and the Soliloquia. This article examines the principles and aims that underlie some of the oldest surviving vernacular translations. It observes how values such as modesty, authority of the source text, the author’s objectives, and concern for the targeted audience all play a part in the development of a translator-specific and perhaps even a text-specific translation theory. The juxtaposition of \"stoic\" and \"emperor\" evokes an obvious dichotomy and thus a recurring theme in Volker Braun's ouevre: the question of how to reconcile brute political force exercised by a superpower and practical morality and concerns for common humanity. Braun, the political activist from the former GDR, presents both a historical play about a short timespan during the reign of Marcus Aurelius and a highly contemporary tragedy about refugees from fear who cause fear. These \"barbarians\" – the ancient Germanic tribes or their modern counterparts from the impoverished parts around the globe – invade the crumbling confines of those who live comfortably. Marcus Aurelius' conflicted character, his vascillation between political duty and altruism, is reflected in his dialogues with an aggressively confrontational partner or alter ego, the Mephistophelian realist Galen who is his constant escort and physician. In short, Braun, in his customary provocative manner, presents the dialectics of an updated, revamped \"Hinze and Kunze\"-relationship. It does so, first of all, by situating allegory in the broader context of Tolkien’s letters and fictional compilations. His reception of the poem is then addressed through textual notes and an incomplete translation Tolkien used in lectures as Exodus became a regular feature of his teaching throughout the 1930s and 1940s. Reconstructed by Joan Turville-Petre and published in 1982, this material shows how Tolkien often departs from standard patristic and early medieval readings of key episodes in the biblical book and their parallels in the poem itself; this is developed in comparison to more recent editorial and textual scholarship stressing the interpretive preeminence of allegory in Exodus. Nevertheless, it is finally argued, the poem also becomes for Tolkien the occasion to imagine a rapprochement of sorts between the historical and the allegorical, something crucial not only to his own
