Blood vessels occupy the same percentage of the total tissue area in nerve and muscle tissues. The nerve, however, has much larger capillaries (about 1.7 ×) spaced farther apart (about 2.5 ×). Comparison of 3½ month with 1‐year‐old rats showed that muscle capillaries increased in diameter (slightly, but significantly) at maturity, but those of the nerve decreased (also significantly). Vascular percentages of total tissue areas did not change. Nerve and muscle samples from monkey, rabbit, mouse, and cat show that the same striking pattern of large, widely spaced vessels distinguishes the nerve from other tissues. Minor interspecies variations exist. Recent studies have provided conflicting data regarding the role of dyslipidemia in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The aim of this study was to determine whether cholesterol level are an independent predictor of survival in ALS. Methods: Cholesterol levels were measured in 427 ALS subjects from three clinical trial databases. Results: The LDL\u002FHDL ratio did not decrease over time, despite significant declines in body mass index (BMI), forced vital capacity (FVC), and ALSFRS‐R. After adjusting for BMI, FVC, and age, the lipid ratio was not associated with survival. There was a “U”‐shaped association between BMI and mortality, with the highest survival at 30–35 kg\u002Fm\u003Cjats:sup>2\u003C\u002Fjats:sup>. neurotoxin type‐A (BoNT\u002FA) is very effective in the therapy of a wide range of human syndromes characterized by hyperactivity of peripheral cholinergic nerve terminals. Little diffusion of this toxin from the site of injection is commonly observed, but even minor changes in this property would greatly affect the validity of the treatment. Different pharmacological formulations of BoNT\u002FA are available, and they may have different diffusion characteristics due to protein complex size, product format, and pharmacological properties. Here we assessed the extent of diffusion of three commercial preparations of BoNT\u002FA: Botox (Allergan), Dysport (Ipsen), and Xeomin (Merz Pharmaceuticals) using a novel and highly sensitive test based on neural cell adhesion molecule (N‐CAM) expression in muscle. N‐CAM is a membrane glycoprotein that accumulates on muscle fibers after denervation and is not expressed in untreated adult muscle. This allows fine monitoring of the functional diffusion of this toxin, and the sensitivity of this assay is emphasized by the use of the mouse model because of the small muscle dimensions. purpose of this study was to determine whether peripheral neuropathy explains the apparent association between diabetes and disability in old age, and to evaluate the utility of lower extremity function tests in older diabetic adults with and without neuropathy. We evaluated 39 adults, aged 70–79 years, for pressure sensation (log\u003Cjats:sub>10\u003C\u002Fjats:sub>\u003Cjats:italic>g\u003C\u002Fjats:italic>), vibration perception threshold (VPT; microns), and electrophysiologic function of the peroneal nerve. The subjects included patients with established diabetic neuropathy (DN; \u003Cjats:italic>n\u003C\u002Fjats:italic> = 14), diabetic controls without neuropathy (DC; \u003Cjats:italic>n\u003C\u002Fjats:italic> = 13), and nondiabetic controls (NDC; \u003Cjats:italic>n\u003C\u002Fjats:italic> = 12). Nonparametric statistical methods were used to relate neuropathy measures to performance in tests of walking speed, static and dynamic balance, coordination, and ankle strength (kilograms). Significant age‐adjusted correlations were observed between measures of sensory neuropathy and a variety of performance measures, and electrophysiologic measures were related to static balance. DN subjects had significantly higher pressure sensation than NDC (5.17 vs 3.38\u003Cjats:italic>g,\u003C\u002Fjats:italic> \u003Cjats:italic>P\u003C\u002Fjats:italic> &lt; 0.05), higher VPT (62.5 vs 21.7 μm, \u003Cjats:italic>P\u003C\u002Fjats:italic> &lt; 0.05), and lower peroneal motor response amplitudes at multiple sites. Pressure sensation and nerve conduction measures did not differ between DC and NDC. Observed differences in physical abilities between older diabetic and nondiabetic adults may have been due to the subset of diabetic individuals with peripheral neuropathy. Quantitative measures of sensory and motor nerve function have distinct effects on physical performance. We found that the amplitude of N20 and P27 recorded over the scalp was attenuated by active movement, vibration, and tactile stimulation of the ipsilateral hand but not by passive movement. Cervical and peripheral responses were unaffected.
