We propose that basic human values are one important determinant of such negative attitudes, and we seek to explain variation across countries in the strength of the effects of values. Based on Schwartz’ (1992, 1994) basic human value theory, we hypothesize that universalism values are conducive to positive attitudes toward immigration, while conformity-tradition reinforce anti-immigration sentiments. We furthermore hypothesize that these value effects are moderated by two contextual variables. Both value effects are expected to be weaker in countries with a higher level of cultural embeddedness. Furthermore, negative effects of conformity-tradition values are hypothesized to be cushioned by a lower proportion of immigrants in the country. A multilevel analysis of data from 24 countries from the fourth round of the European Social Survey (2008–2009) supports these hypotheses. overview describes the ambivalent result of humans’ evolution towards a social and cooperative species. The evolution of friendship, based on commitment rituals and norms, solved the problem of defection in reciprocal altruism. The social brain implies the cognitive capacity of “mentalizing” and of keeping track of the reputation of group members, but, equally as importantly, generates strong emotions depending on the degree of social integration or social exclusion. Strong emotions linked to categories of social relationships, in particular to friends who we regard as almost irreplaceable, generate commitment and reduce social transactions costs and thereby facilitate cooperation. A multilevel perspective on social categorizations reveals, however, that a similar mechanism applies between cultural groups, owing to cultural group-level selection. Humans apply categorical distinctions within and between groups. They distinguish in-group and out-group members by cultural markers, and, in addition, between friends and others. In this perspective, cultural markers generate categorizations and emotions that facilitate unconditional support if required, but can also result in out-group rejection, and, in combination with neurochemicals, in dehumanization as well.\u003C\u002Fjats:p>",{"EN":340},"The Evolution of Human Sociality. Für die Erklärung eines solchen Zusammenhangs kontrastieren wir Argumente aus ressourcenbasierten Ansätzen und der Geschlechterrollensozialisation mit Prozessen im Rahmen von „Doing Gender“ und der Kompensationshypothese. Die Analysen mit Daten des Sozio-oekonomischen Panels (1993–2011) zeigen, dass Frauen, die eine geschlechts-untypische Berufstätigkeit ausüben, eine solche Abweichung von traditionellen Geschlechterrollen offenbar durch eine verstärkte Übernahme „weiblich konnotierter“ Haushaltstätigkeiten (wie Waschen, Kochen, Putzen) kompensieren. Männer kompensieren eine entsprechende Abweichung demgegenüber eher durch eine verstärkte Übernahme „männlich konnotierter“ Aufgaben im Haushalt (wie Reparaturarbeiten). Letztgenannte Hausarbeiten werden generell dann besonders selten ausgeübt, wenn einer der Partner in einem geschlechtlich ausbalancierten Beruf tätig ist. Abweichungen von traditionellen Geschlechternormen auf dem Arbeitsmarkt scheinen sich daher sowohl für Frauen als auch für Männer auszuwirken und werden vor allem anhand von Hausarbeiten ausgeglichen,
