Its 22 indicators arranged in 4 domains have been computed by UNECE for EU countries for the period 2010–2018. Many of its constituent dimensions are negatively associated with age, with older people being less active. Given the context of generalized population ageing, of which EU countries stand at the forefront, it is natural to consider to what extent population ageing is affecting negatively active ageing indicators. Based on indicator- and sex-specific linear models with country-specific fixed-effects there are surprisingly no indicators for which population ageing has had a negative effect. A similar pattern is also observed based on aggregate indicators. The interpretation of this surprising results is double: positive effects of ageing can be explained by successful adaptation of EU societies to ageing (at least over the period 2010–2018), or to ageing indicators working as proxies for omitted trends in cohort health and human capital. For some of the indicators it is possible to discern the relevant explanation, but more work is needed for a precise separation. Population Council, Policy Research Division.",{"EN":450},"Despite its curability by a simple and low-cost surgical procedure, cataract remains the leading cause—accounting for almost one-half—of all blindness in the world. The problem is particularly severe in developing countries, and with the ageing of populations and increasing life expectancy, the burden of cataract disease is expected to increase substantially in the coming years. Using a demographic approach, this study examined the prevalence of cataract and estimated lifetime with and without cataract among older adults in China, a rapidly ageing country with the world’s largest population. Data came from the 2002 Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey and life tables in the same year. Sullivan’s method was used. The results indicated that overall, 5.7% percent of Chinese aged 65 and over reported having cataract that is diagnosed by an ophthalmologist. Cataract increases with age, affects women more than men, and is higher in urban than rural areas. At age 65, men and women can expect on average 0.7 years (4.7%) and 1.2 years (7.3%) of remaining life with cataract, respectively. The corresponding figures for urban and rural older adults are 1.7 (9.8%) and 0.6 (4.1%) years. The prevalence rates and life expectancy with cataract were likely underestimated given the low levels of eye examinations to detect eye diseases among the Chinese, particularly in rural areas. We discussed preventive strategies to minimize the risk and delay the onset of cataract. It will have an impact on rising healthcare costs, unaffordable pension liabilities, and changing healthcare demands. The health systems of many LLMICs are unprepared to meet these challenges and highlighting the modifiable factors that may help decrease these pressures is important. This review assessed the prevalence of healthy ageing and the modifiable factors that may promote\u002Finhibit healthy ageing among older people in LLMIC. A systematic search of all articles published from 2000 to June 2022 was conducted in Scopus, PubMed (MEDLINE), and Web of Science. All observational studies reporting the prevalence of healthy ageing and its associations with socio-demographic, lifestyle, psychological, and social factors were examined. Random-effect models were used to estimate the pooled prevalence of healthy ageing, and meta-analyses were conducted to assess the risk\u002Fbenefit of modifiable factors. From 3,376 records, 13 studies (n = 81,144; 53% of females; age ≥ 60 years) met the inclusion criteria. The pooled prevalence of healthy ageing ranged from 24.7% to 56.5% with lower prevalence for a multi-dimensional model and higher prevalence for single global self-rated measures. Factors positively associated with healthy ageing included education, income, and physical activity. Being underweight was negatively associated with healthy ageing. Almost half of older people in LLMIC were found to meet healthy ageing criteria, but this estimate varied substantially depending on the healthy ageing measures utilized (multi-dimensional = 24.7%; single indicator = 56.5%). The healthy ageing prevalences for both measures are lower compared to that in high-income countries. Developing health policies and educative interventions aimed at increasing physical exercise, social support, and improving socio-economic status and nutrition will be important to promote the healthy In the main these studies aim to collect data on population ageing in terms of social, medical and environmental factors. Accordingly the studies being compared in this review focus primarily on health, wellbeing and social issues. These studies have made it possible to measure, evaluate and understand a wide variety of determinants of population change and helped to identify the challenges faced on many levels for the twenty first century and beyond. They have enabled organisations, health care service providers and government more readily able to anticipate and be responsive to the need of the dynamics of the population change as not only the population rapidly increases but faces a significant rise in the percentage of elderly persons. This review looks at the aim of each study, comparisons in methodology, key policy themes, benefits, collaborations with other datasets, gaps and challenges and key findings to date. However, other factors including social relationships are also as crucial as health in determining their life assessment, particularly among older adults in Asia. This paper used the data of Vietnam National Ageing Survey 2011 (VNAS 2011) to examine life satisfaction of Vietnamese older people’s (aged 60 and older) in rural and urban areas in relation to their health conditions and their social relationships, including with adult children. Logistic regression was employed and revealed that sufficient income had positive influence on older people’s satisfaction of life in both rural and urban areas (Rural OR 2.27; 95% CI 1.72–2.99; Urban OR 2.30; 95% CI 1.47–3.58). Difficulties with mobility and sleeping were negatively associated with older person’s life satisfaction, however, affectual solidarity was the most influential factor (Rural OR 5.88; 95% CI 4.40–7.83; Urban OR 5.92; 95% CI 3.52–9.93). Therefore, intergenerational relationships are vital to older people’s life satisfaction beyond health, income, household socioeconomic status, which varied between rural and urban areas. Key agricultural activitiesperformed by farmers, self-reported andobserved physical intensity of those activities, and their distribution across age, amongother aspects, are explored indetail. Semi-structured questionnaire and fitness trackers, along with the standarddescriptive statistics and regressionanalyses were used to collect and analyze data within Lakhisarai district. The resultsshow at what age are farmersmost and least active before retiring (18-24 and 35-39 age groups, respectively), atwhat age does their involvement inagriculture begin to notably decline (60-64 age group), what are the most oftenperformed agricultural activities(planting, irrigating, and harvesting), and which ones are considered difficult(transporting, weeding, and harvesting).The results also highlight the position of elderly household members as net negativecontributors, along with theirpresently modest share in the population. In that context, understanding who currently works for longer can help policymakers to design policies to facilitate longer working. In particular, it is important to know if longer working is a choice or a necessity, where necessity arises from a lack of pension income. In this paper, we use data from the first four waves of the Irish Longitudinal Study of Ageing (TILDA), covering the period 2010–2016, to examine patterns of employment among men and women aged 65+. We find that a lack of pension income is an important determinant of later-life working and that this applies for both men and women. Although older women are significantly less likely to work than older men, we find few differences in the pattern of determinants of longer working among older men and women. However, while women are significantly less likely to work than men, this effect is stronger among married women compared to single women. This suggests that older women without immediate access to family-provided financial support may need to work to support themselves. This adds to the picture of later life work being a necessity as opposed to a choice. However, there has been little attempt to synthesize existing knowledge of this practice, often called retirement migration. Scoping reviews are a widely accepted form of research synthesis. In this article we present the findings of a scoping review that asks: what is known about the factors motivating short-term international retirement migration? Using the guidance of a reference librarian, we searched 17 databases to identify pertinent academic articles. We read 110 articles in full, following an initial abstract review stage, ultimately including 44 in the review. The included articles primarily reported on studies that were qualitative in nature and heavily focused on the lived experiences of short-term international retirement migrants. Four synthesis themes summarize existing knowledge about the factors that motivate this transnational mobility: (1) the destination (e.g., climate, natural and cultural environment); (2) the people (e.g., social networks, language); (3) the cost (e.g., cost of living abroad, affordability of health care and housing); and (4) the movement (e.g., ease of travel, visa and residency requirements). Research to date mainly focuses on short-term international retirement migrant destinations in affluent countries or destinations chosen by seasonal migrants from relatively wealthy Global North nations.
