Methods are broadly classified into evolutionary game theory and selection dynamics, evolutionary computation and multi-agent models, each with relevant subcategories. The components or building blocks are organized into diversity, innovation, selection, bounded rationality, diffusion, path dependency and lock-in, coevolution, multilevel and group selection, and mechanisms of growth. The number of alternatives that has been proposed for each category is vast, making it difficult to comprehend the variety of assumptions and formalizations underlying existing evolutionary-economic models. Our survey aims to clarify for each model component the choice range, formal expressions, associated assumptions, and possible techniques for formalization. Firms inside parks can improve performance due to certain advantages related to knowledge spillovers and shared resources that can be particularly useful in earlier stages of the industry life cycle. In these industries, local knowledge sharing is particularly useful because no standards are clearly established, as we have confirmed in a sample of 12,800 firms from the PITEC database, located either on- or off-park. We also find that young firms can benefit more from the park than more established businesses in terms of both business growth and innovative capacity. Although older firms have greater experience and investments that would increase their capacity to absorb external knowledge, their associated rigidities prevent them from incorporating changes into Given the crucial role of sectors as the bridge between micro- and macro-analysis it is worth quoting the introductory passage to Keynes' two sides of the moon analogy (ibid): So long as economists are concerned with what is called the Theory of Value, thery have been accustomed to teach that prices are governed by the conditions of supply and demand; and, in particular, changes in marginal cost and the elasticity of short-period supply have played a prominent part. But when they pass in Volume II, or more often in a separate treatise, to the Theory of Money and Prices, we hear no more of these homely but intelligible concepts and move into a world where prices are governed by the quantity of money, by its income-velocity, by the velocity of circulation relatively to the volume of transactions, by hoarding, by forced saving, by inflation and deflationet hoc genus omne, and little or no attempt is made to relate these vaguer phrases to our former notions of the elasticities of supply and demand.\nWhen I came in Part Five ofThe World Economy: History and Prospect (Austin; University of Texas Press, 1978) to write brief economic histories of twenty countries by stages I dramatized the argument by presenting computerized statistical maps of both aggregate data and sectoral data reflecting the introduction and decelerating sectoral paths of diffusion of major technologies. In his valedictory summation, Simon Kuznets, having by-passed the sectors in his post-1945 work on growth, returned to this problem of linkage in a quite fruitful wayEconomic Growth of nations: Total Output and Production Structure (Cambridge, Mass; The Belknap Press of Harvard Press, 1971). In a sustained passage of some thirty pages he begins (p. 315) by expressing frustration with the statistical data and, by implication, with his own highly aggregated categories: Since the high and accelerated rate of technological change is a major source of high rates of growth in per capita product and productivity in modern times and is also responsible for striking shifts in production structure, it is frustrating that the available sectoral classifications fail to separate new industries from old, and distinguish those affected by technological innovations. In the pages that follow, Kuznets illustrates the need for greater disaggregation, if growth is to be linked both to the coming in of new technologies and to his national income and other grand aggregates in terms of which he had hitherto analyzed growth. He discusses leading sectors, old and new, and, using a National Bureau of Economic Research study, presents a highly disaggregated table to capture their evolution in the United States over the period 1880–1948. Against that background he then sets up a model to illustrate the impact on aggregate growth rates of new rapid-growth sectors and new products. It is rewarding to be back with the author ofSecular Movements in Prices and Production and to observe his sensitive appreciation of the innovational process masked by his latter-day overriding preoccupation with large national income aggregates and the three categories of production he derived from Colin Clark.\nNew York, Basic Books, 1988.\nI believe historians will date the post-war turning point as the late 1950s when the American balance of payments first came under sustained pressure and, under Bretton Woods arrangements, there were gold losses. Social interactions are a specific form of interdependence whereby the changes in the behavior of other agents affect utility functions for households and production functions for producers. In this paper, we apply the general concept of social interactions to the area of the economics of innovation and we articulate the view that knowledge interactions play a central role in the generation of new technological knowledge so that innovation becomes the emergent property of a system, rather than the product of individual actions. In particular, we articulate and test the hypothesis that different layers of knowledge interactions play a crucial role in determining the rate of technological change that each firm is able to introduce. The paper presents an empirical analysis of firm level total factor productivity (TFP) for a sample of 7,020 Italian manufacturing companies observed during the years 1996–2005.
