The international range of authors and breadth of coverage allow the journal to forge links between many different areas of research including psychology, linguistics, cognitive science and anthropology. This interdisciplinary approach spans a wide range of interests: phonology, phonetics, morphology, syntax, vocabulary, semantics, pragmatics, sociolinguistics, and any other recognised facet of language study. Aspects of reading development are considered when there is a clear language component. The journal normally publishes full-length empirical studies or General Articles as well as shorter Brief Research Reports. To be appropriate for this journal, articles should include some quantitative data analyses, and articles based on case studies need to have a convincing rationale for this design. This study examined the spontaneous production of determiners by two French-speaking children aged 1 ; 5–2 ; 5. It found that determiners were produced earlier with monosyllabic words, and later with disyllabic and trisyllabic words. This suggests that French-speaking children's early determiners are prosodically licensed as part of a binary foot, with determiners appearing more consistently only once prosodic representations become more complex. This study therefore provides support for the notion that grammatical morphemes first appear in prosodically licensed contexts, suggesting that some of the early variability in morphological production is systematic and predictable.
Prosodically-conditioned variability in children's production of French determiners
18300431
10.1017/s0305000907008276","PUBLICATION","VERIFIED","2024-09-22T23:15:44.832+00:00","Auto Verify",[155],"EN","https://www.cambridge.org/core/product/identifier/S0305000907008276/type/journal_article",[158,179
"2dd375e4-30e3-4390-a6ca-ffbb44c6dc7b",[],[162
"f525aafb-00d0-4de2-b4b3-4b009d525244
"ea9e6bc7-addd-4322-b025-6add22c0c9a9","2024-09-22T23:15:44.854+00:00",[],"Dept-of-Cognitive-and-Linguistic-Sciences-Brown-University-Box-1978-Providence-RI-02912-USA-
Dept. of Cognitive and Linguistic Sciences, Brown University, Box 1978, Providence, RI 02912, USA.
"A5075485044
https://orcid.org/0000-0003-3884-8886
Katherine Demuth
"b128a6ff-627f-490e-b15d-eb886dc24649",1,[],[184
"de235ffb-1646-4d81-bc5c-6d201789bdd9
"a28372a6-1311-4ee3-81cb-99a0bd49872d","2024-09-22T23:15:44.867+00:00",[],"Brown-University-and-University-of-Hawai-i
Brown University and University of Hawai‘i
"A5087741613
https://orcid.org/0000-0002-0748-172X
Annie Tremblay","ARTICLE
[
[],[],[214,221
[
[117],[121,122,123,124
[
[98,99],[102,103
"35
99-127
1",155
{"2012":238,"2013":238,"2014":239,"2015":239,"2016":240,"2017":241,"2018":242,"2019":243,"2020":81,"2021":242,"2022":244,"2023":181,"2024":81},7,9,4,5,12,11,45,"2008-02-01",2008,[248,251,254,257,260,263,266,269,272,275,278,281,284,287,290,293,296,299,302,305,308,311,314,317,320,323,326,329,332,335,338,341,344,347,350,353,356,359,362,365,368,371,374
"Peters, 1983, The units of language acquisition",{
"10.1017/S0305000900004463
"Demuth, 2007, Proceedings of the 31st Annual Boston University Conference on Language Development, 196",{
"Demuth K. , McCullough E. & Kehoe M. In the present investigation, neighbourhood analyses of two children's (age 3;6) expressive lexicons, maternal input, and an adult lexicon were conducted. In addition to raw counts and frequency-weighted counts, neighbourhood size was calculated as the proportion of the lexicon to which each target word is similar, to normalize for vocabulary size differences. These analyses revealed that children's lexicons contain more similar sounding words than previous analyses indicated. Further, neighbourhoods appear denser earlier in development relative to vocabulary size, presumably because children first learn words with more frequent sounds and sound combinations. Neighbourhood density as a proportion of the size of the lexicon then decreases over development as children acquire words with less frequent sounds and sound combinations. These findings suggest that positing fundamentally different lexical representations for children may be premature.
Phonological neighbourhoods in the developing lexicon
12846305
10.1017/s0305000903005579",[155],"https://www.cambridge.org/core/product/identifier/S0305000903005579/type/journal_article",[402,422
"16356e88-2fdb-4f43-baf5-141e31bc73f6",[],[406
"1901a7e2-8c0b-45a2-a7aa-e62204a13d05
"a31e017f-b9e0-454f-92b5-d579a6fbd4b0","2024-09-22T23:15:39.201+00:00","2025-01-28T19:24:39.120+00:00",[],"Department-of-Psychology-University-of-Wisconsin-Madison-53706-USA-
Department of Psychology, University of Wisconsin, Madison, 53706, USA.
"A5079125401
Jeffry A. This effect holds for randomly sampled words and, to a lesser extent, for matched pairs. While parents did not adjust the clarity of word tokens to the linguistic naiveté of the child listeners, they did adjust intelligibility inversely to the observed predictability of the sampled words in their sentence contexts, and words to children proved more redundant in this sense. This study proposes that this trend is mirrored in the difficulties that children encounter in mapping homonyms. Two experiments are presented in support of this proposition. In Experiment 1, 16 preschool children (mean age=4;6) are shown to perform quite well on tasks requiring them to assign novel meanings to nonsense words. They perform poorly, however, on tasks requiring them to assign a different, unrelated meaning to a known word. Experiment 2 (N=18, mean age=4;5) shows that preschoolers' performance on this task, however, improves when a known word appears in a syntactic frame that is not appropriate for the word (as when a verb appears in a noun syntactic frame), thereby providing a strong indication that a new meaning is appropriate.
Children's resistance to homonymy: an experimental study of pseudohomonyms
16045253
10.1017/s0305000904006749",[155],"https://www.cambridge.org/core/product/identifier/S0305000904006749/type/journal_article",[704
"257665f1-d8f3-485d-bc28-95f6506b7eb3",[],[708
"dd6321cc-82f3-4430-8cde-118520cf46e3
"e5d5e6e5-881d-4f2f-8ba8-f0504109136b","2024-02-09T12:02:05.146+00:00","2025-02-06T11:51:51.000+00:00",[],"University-of-Illinois-Urbana-Champaign
University of Illinois, Urbana–Champaign
"A5033694013
https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4169-8770
Devin M. The results of this experiment indicated that turn taking caused changes in the quality of infant vocal sounds. When the adult maintained a give-and-take pattern, the infant produced a higher ratio of syllabic/vocalic sounds. Children's uses of the different forms of Go were compared with respect to syntactic structure and the semantics encoded. The data are compatible with the suggestion that the children were not operating with a single verb representation that differentiated between different forms of Go but rather that their knowledge of the relationship between the different forms of Go varied depending on the structure produced and the meaning encoded. However, a good predictor of the children's use of different forms of Go in particular structures and to express particular meanings was the frequency of use of those structures and meanings with particular forms of Go in the input. The implications of these findings for theories of syntactic category formation and abstract rule-based descriptions of grammar are discussed.
Going, going, gone: the acquisition of the verb ‘go’
12471973
10.1017/s030500090200538x","2024-09-24T20:05:40.546+00:00",[155],"https://www.cambridge.org/core/product/identifier/S030500090200538X/type/journal_article",[1097,1119,1141,1163
"c0d9f5e2-03ec-4d23-920e-9b699664dab2",[],[1101
"47555a78-aa82-4e64-bf58-e1dc4ddb81d5
"36a86fc4-f16f-4a32-806e-aa9e6051e771","2024-04-18T21:40:34.973+00:00","2025-02-01T12:56:06.658+00:00",[],"University-of-Manchester
University of Manchester
"A5050545267
https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9483-7893
Anna Theakston
"824e29a7-fc1d-459c-ad34-1c4bbc547b0b",[],[1123
"8a6252c0-086a-4bd8-a9f5-95f1e5b50fc8
"cbc9d6fc-95b9-4438-b523-5643fa6b4448","2024-01-13T14:13:58.935+00:00","2025-02-03T23:30:45.157+00:00",[],"University-of-Nottingham
University of Nottingham
"A5089214760
https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7077-9713
Julián M. CDI data have been used to explore a variety of theoretically important topics, but, with few exceptions, researchers have had to rely on data collected in their own lab. In this paper, we remedy this issue by presenting Wordbank, a structured database of CDI data combined with a browsable web interface. Wordbank archives CDI data across languages and labs, providing a resource for researchers interested in early language, as well as a platform for novel analyses. The site allows interactive exploration of patterns of vocabulary growth at the level of both individual children and particular words. We also introduce wordbankr, a software package for connecting to the database directly. Together, these tools extend the abilities of students and researchers to explore quantitative trends in vocabulary development.
Wordbank: an open repository for developmental vocabulary data
27189114
10.1017/s0305000916000209","2024-09-24T20:05:36.696+00:00",[155],"https://www.cambridge.org/core/product/identifier/S0305000916000209/type/journal_article",[1247,1267,1284,1301
"cd98e7cc-f775-49eb-8112-adb156ac8ed8",[],[1251
"8beb0fd2-2555-4f62-b5aa-395c272f5700
"191e1fb3-4958-4007-b80d-c4f227326947","2024-01-16T23:10:51.588+00:00","2025-01-01T00:55:37.702+00:00",[],"Stanford-University-USA
Stanford University USA
"A5000363528
Mika Braginsky
"1e644c19-cac1-481f-9524-03ca7bb7e42e",[],[1271
"8e1933d0-98ba-4b84-b630-57141adb22c8
[
"A5103234894
https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7551-4378
Michael C. Cambridge: MIT, 1998.
Stephen Crain (C) & Rosalind Thornton (T) have garnered a well-deserved reputation for their unwavering commitment to language learnability as a constraint not only on theories of child language and language development but also on experimental design and the interpretation of experimental findings. In his well-known defense of children's early knowledge of syntactic constraints, Crain (1991) argued for the widely-held position that the best solution to the learnability problem is to assume that grammatical knowledge which cannot be learned on the basis of experience is specified in advance as part of the human biological endowment for language in the form of a UNIVERSALGRAMMAR (UG) (Chomsky, 1965). With respect to experimental design, C&T have strongly maintained that even young children know UG constraints but perform poorly in some experiments-due to the extralinguistic demands associated with experimental tasks, particularly those involved in presupposition accommodation and complex response planning. C&T specifically design their experiments to reduce the impact of extralinguistic demands on children's linguistic performance while at the same time providing felicitous environments for adultlike performance.
Learnability and linguistic performance
10.1017/s0305000904006051","2024-09-12T18:58:18.965+00:00",[155],"https://www.cambridge.org/core/product/identifier/S0305000904006051/type/journal_article",[1585
"7664b123-2fd9-4bb0-afe3-1f0ddb9ced64",[],[1589
"8b9b7471-9742-492c-b8a0-72e55e6587bd
"6961597a-4bab-49d8-8f2c-b2a0f60fb63f","2023-11-25T03:07:39.523+00:00","2024-12-25T22:53:45.960+00:00",[],"University-of-Aarhus-Denmark
University of Aarhus, Denmark
"A5022803160
Kenneth F. Subjects were 41 two-year-old children and their mothers. Measures included maternal report of the age at which she began to read to the child, the frequency of home reading sessions, the number of stories read per week, and the frequency of visits by the child to the local library. Measures of language skill used were the child's receptive and expressive scores on the revised Reynell Developmental Language Scales. Multiple regression analyses indicated that picture-book reading exposure was more strongly related to receptive than to expressive language. Age of onset of home reading routines was the most important predictor of oral language skills.
