The geometry of the model was based on magnetic resonance images of the skull of a healthy male subject. Pressure measurements, flow visualization, and hot-wire anemometry studies were performed at flow rates that, in vivo, corresponded to flows of between 0.05 and 1.50 l\u002Fs. The influence of nasal congestion and the collapse of the external nares were examined by using modeling clay to simulate local constrictions in the cross section. A dimensionless analysis of the pressure losses within three sections of the airway revealed the influence of various anatomic dimensions on nasal resistance. The region of the exterior nose behaves as a contraction-expansion nozzle in which the pressure losses are a function of the smallest cross-sectional area. Losses in the interior nose resemble those associated with channel flow. The nasopharynx is modeled as a sharp bend in a circular duct. Good correspondence was found between the predicted and actual pressure losses in the model under conditions that stimulated local obstructions and congestion. Because 4-AP improves muscle contractility, we hypothesized that DAP would also increase force and, in addition, ameliorate fatigue and improve the neurotransmission failure component of fatigue. Rat diaphragm strips were studied in vitro (37°C). In field-stimulated muscle, 0.3 mM DAP significantly increased diaphragm twitch force, prolonged contraction time, and shifted the force-frequency relationship to the left without altering peak tetanic force, resulting in increased force at stimulation frequencies ≤50 Hz. During 20-Hz intermittent stimulation, DAP increased diaphragm peak force compared with control during a 150-s fatigue run and, furthermore, significantly improved maintenance of intratrain force. The relative contribution of neurotransmission failure to fatigue was estimated by comparing the force generated by phrenic nerve-stimulated muscles with that generated by curare-treated field-stimulated muscles. DAP significantly increased force in nerve-stimulated muscles and, in addition, reduced the neurotransmission failure contribution to diaphragm fatigue. Thus DAP increases muscle force at low-to-intermediate stimulation frequencies, improves overall force and intratrain fatigue during 20-Hz intermittent stimulation, and reduces neurotransmission Samples of the vastus lateralis muscle extracted before decompression (SL-1), at 380 and 282 Torr, and on return to sea level (SL-2) indicated that maximal activities of enzymes representative of the citric acid cycle, beta-oxidation, glycogenolysis, glycolysis, glucose phosphorylation, and high-energy phosphate transfer were unchanged (P greater than 0.05) at 380 and 282 Torr over initial SL-1 values. After exposure to 282 Torr, however, representing an additional period of approximately 7 days, reductions (P less than 0.05) were noted in succinic dehydrogenase (21%), citrate synthetase (37%), and hexokinase (53%) between SL-2 and 380 Torr. No changes were found in the other enzymes. Capillarization as measured by the number of capillaries per cross-sectional area (CC\u002FFA) was increased (P less than 0.05) in both type I (0.94 +\u002F- 0.8 vs. 1.16 +\u002F- 0.05) and type II (0.84 +\u002F- 0.07 vs. 1.05 +\u002F- 0.08) fibers between SL-1 and SL-2. This increase was mediated by a reduction in fiber area. No changes were found in fiber-type distribution (type I vs. type II). Uterine blood flow was reduced by adjusting a vascular occluder placed around the maternal common internal iliac artery to decrease fetal arterial O2 content from 6.1 +\u002F- 0.3 to 4.1 +\u002F- 0.3 ml\u002Fdl for 48 h. Associated with the decrease in fetal O2 content, there was a slight increase in fetal arterial PCO2 and decrease in pH, which were both transient. After this initial inhibition there was a return to normal incidence of both fetal breathing movements and eye movements by 16 h of the prolonged hypoxemia. Reflex cutaneous vasoconstriction and vasodilation are both impaired with primary aging, rendering the aged more vulnerable to hypothermia and cardiovascular complications from heat-related illness. Age-related alterations in the thermoregulatory control of skin blood flow occur at multiple points along the efferent arm of the reflex, including 1) diminished sympathetic outflow, 2) altered presynaptic neurotransmitter synthesis, 3) reduced vascular responsiveness, and 4) impairments in downstream (endothelial and vascular smooth muscle) second-messenger signaling. A theoretical analysis of the effect of altitude on running performance is presented using a mathematical model we have recently described and validated (J. Appl. Physiol. 67: 453–465, 1989). This model relates the average power output available over a given running time for a given combination of anaerobic capacity, maximal aerobic power, and endurance capability. For short sprinting distances, the contribution of aerobic metabolism to the energy requirement is small and the speed sustained is high. The reduction of maximal aerobic power with altitude is, thus, negligible, whereas the reduction of aerodynamic resistance is beneficial. Accordingly the performance steadily increases with altitude (e.g., average speed for 100 m at Mexico City is 101.9% of the average speed at sea level). On the other hand, the reduction in maximal aerobic power with altitude is associated with a reduction in performance over middle and long distances (800 m to marathon). For 400 m an improvement in performance is observed up to an altitude of approximately 2,400–2,500 m (average speed approximately 101.4% of sea level speed). Beyond this altitude the reduction in air density cannot compensate for the reduction in maximal aerobic power, and the performance deteriorates. The role of neuromuscular activity in maintaining the normal enzyme heterogeneity found in a predominantly fast mixed muscle was studied. Enzymatic profiles of single fibers in the adult cat medial gastrocnemius (MG) were examined after almost complete elimination of neuromuscular activity for 6 mo. Inactivity was achieved by spinal cord isolation (SI), i.e., spinal transection at T12-T13 and L7-S1 combined with bilateral dorsal rhizotomy between the two transection sites. Cross-sectional area and succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) and alpha-glycerophosphate dehydrogenase (GPD) activities were determined in a population of fibers identified in frozen serial cross sections. Each fiber was categorized as light or dark on the basis of its staining characteristics for qualitative myosin adenosinetriphosphatase (ATPase), alkaline preincubation, and its reaction to fast and slow myosin heavy chain (MHC) antibodies. SI resulted in a conversion of nearly all light (approximately 36% in the control) to dark ATPase fibers. Virtually all MG fibers in the SI cats reacted with the fast MHC antibody, whereas very few fibers reacted with slow MHC antibody. On the basis of fiber cross-sectional area, it was estimated that the MG atrophied by approximately 10% after SI. Compared with the mean of the dark and light ATPase fibers in control (weighted by the percent fiber type distribution), mean SDH activity was significantly lower (approximately 70%) and mean GPD activity was significantly higher (approximately 120%) in the SI cats. The performance of 12 male volunteers in an adding test and in a test requiring prolonged vigilance was measured at normal body temperature and while temperature was maintained at 37.3, 37.9, and 38.5 C. Each subject was measured at each level of body temperature on four occasions. Both the extent and the direction of the effect on performance varied with 1) the task being carried out, and 2) the degree of temperature elevation. Compared with performance at normal temperatures, the ability to add was impaired and vigilance was improved at 38.5 C. At 37.3 C, on the other hand, smaller changes reflected in general an improvement in adding and an impairment of vigilance. The coordination of breathing and swallowing was studied in 13 young healthy adult subjects during the administration of graduated volumes of water (3, 10, and 20 ml). Simultaneous submental electromyography, respiratory plethysmography, and fiber-optic endoscopy revealed a well-timed pattern between physiological respiratory events and related swallowing events. Expiration was the phase of respiration that was most closely associated with deglutition. Respiration was usually maintained at the onset of deglutition and halted before the onset of laryngeal elevation. The apneic interval was approximately 1 s for the 3-, 10-, and 20-ml boluses. A large-volume (100-ml) straw swallow resulted in variable respiration-swallowing patterns and in statistically significant differences (P &lt; 0.01) in the duration of apneic pause and laryngeal excursion. The expiratory phase of respiration resumed nearly 0.50 s before the completion of swallowing.
