social networks are descriptions of social structure which, aside from their intrinsic interest for understanding sociality, can have significant bearing across many fields of the social system of species or populations in a quantitative and comparable manner. However, it requires careful consideration of underlying assumptions, in particular differentiating real from observed networks and controlling for inherent biases that are common in social data.\u003C\u002Fjats:p>\n\u003C\u002Fjats:list-item>\n\n\u003Cjats:list-item>\n\u003Cjats:p>We provide a practical guide for using this framework to analyse animal social systems and test hypotheses. First, we discuss key considerations when defining nodes and edges, and when designing methods for collecting data. We discuss different approaches for inferring social networks from these data and displaying them. We then provide an overview of methods for quantifying properties of nodes and networks, as well as for testing hypotheses concerning network structure and network processes. It has been proposed that a similar mechanism could apply to carnivorous predators too, although the evidence is still lacking.\u003C\u002Fjats:p>\u003Cjats:p>\u003Cjats:bold>2.\u003C\u002Fjats:bold> Here, we show that the differentiation of biotypes of specialized ant‐eating spiders of the genus\u003Cjats:italic>Zodarion\u003C\u002Fjats:italic>has probably been induced by prey‐shifting. We focused on two forms of one species\u003Cjats:italic>Z. styliferum\u003C\u002Fjats:italic>from the Iberian Peninsula that presumably represent ecological races. We conducted geographic, ecological, venom‐oriented, reproductive and genetic divergence analysis among multiple populations collected at a number of sites across Portugal and Madeira.\u003C\u002Fjats:p>\u003Cjats:p>\u003Cjats:bold>3.\u003C\u002Fjats:bold> Geographic analysis revealed that the two forms occur in mosaic sympatry. Each form was found to associate in nature with a different ant species in a different habitat. Specifically, the\u003Cjats:italic>styliferum\u003C\u002Fjats:italic>form hunted predominantly\u003Cjats:italic>Messor\u003C\u002Fjats:italic>ants, and the\u003Cjats:italic>extraneum\u003C\u002Fjats:italic>form hunted mainly\u003Cjats:italic>Camponotus\u003C\u002Fjats:italic>ants. Laboratory experiments revealed that the two forms exhibit a significant preference for attacking focal ants, demonstrating higher paralysis efficiency, and also show different venom composition. Cross‐mating of the two forms was significantly less likely than between pairs of the same form, suggesting moderate assortative mating. Phylogenetic analyses indicate low genetic differentiation of the two forms and parallel‐repeated evolution of biotypes.\u003C\u002Fjats:p>\u003Cjats:p>\u003Cjats:bold>4.\u003C\u002Fjats:bold> Adaptive prey‐shifting correlated with habitat preference are at present the most valid explanations for biotype formation in\u003Cjats:italic>Zodarion\u003C\u002Fjats:italic>. explicit population ecology. The ways in which the elements have been brought together are reviewed with particular emphasis on dispersal distance distributions and the value of mechanistic models.\u003C\u002Fjats:p>\u003C\u002Fjats:list-item>\u003Cjats:list-item>\u003Cjats:p>There is a continuous range of movement behaviours and in some species, dispersal is a clearly delineated event but not in others. The biological complexities restrict conclusions to high‐level generalizations but there may be principles that are common to dispersal and other movements.\u003C\u002Fjats:p>\u003C\u002Fjats:list-item>\u003Cjats:list-item>\u003Cjats:p>Random walk and diffusion models when appropriately elaborated can provide an understanding of dispersal distance relationships on spatial and temporal scales relevant to dispersal. Leptokurtosis in the relationships may be the result of a combination of factors including population heterogeneity, correlation, landscape features, time integration and density dependence. The inclusion in diffusion models of individual variation appears to be a useful elaboration. The limitations of the negative exponential and other phenomenological models are discussed.\u003C\u002Fjats:p>\u003C\u002Fjats:list-item>\u003Cjats:list-item>\u003Cjats:p>The dynamics of metapopulation models are sensitive to what appears to be small differences in the assumptions about dispersal. In order to represent dispersal realistically in population models, it is suggested that phenomenological models should be replaced by those based on movement behaviour incorporating individual variation.\u003C\u002Fjats:p>\u003C\u002Fjats:list-item>\u003Cjats:list-item>\u003Cjats:p>The conclusions are presented as a set of candidate principles for evaluation. The main features of the principles are that uncorrelated or correlated random walk, not linear movement, is expected where the directions of habitat patches are unpredictable and more complex behaviour when organisms have the ability to orientate or navigate. Individuals within populations vary in their movement behaviour and dispersal; part of this variation is a product of random elements in movement behaviour and some of it is heritable. We used translocation experiments to establish foraging distances and measured foraging trip duration to analyse how solitary bees cope with the distance between nesting sites and suitable food plants in different habitat types.\u003C\u002Fjats:p>\u003C\u002Fjats:list-item>\n\u003Cjats:list-item>\u003Cjats:p>Maximum foraging distance between nesting site and food patch was 150–600 m for the 16 bee species examined. Foraging distance was correlated positively with body length. Mean foraging trip duration, measured for seven bee species, ranged from 6 to 28 min and was also correlated with body length. In a study of the polylectic species \u003Cjats:italic>Osmia rufa\u003C\u002Fjats:italic>\n              , we found a significant decrease in foraging trip duration with increasing number of plant species. Logistic regressions showed that the oligolectic \n              \u003Cjats:italic>Megachile lapponica\u003C\u002Fjats:italic>\n               nested in trap nests with a probability of 50% if the distance between trap nest and food patch was less than 250 m. The oligolectic \n              \u003Cjats:italic>Chelostoma rapunculi\u003C\u002Fjats:italic> utilized trap nests when the distance to the nearest food patch was less than 300 m.\u003C\u002Fjats:p>\u003C\u002Fjats:list-item>\n\u003Cjats:list-item>\u003Cjats:p>These experiments showed that solitary bees have a rather small foraging range so local habitat structure appears to be of more importance than large‐scale landscape structure. All requirements for sustaining viable populations must be within this range.
