Chicago and La Salle, Illinois: Open Court, 2005.
Judged from typological perspective, both Samuel 1 and 2 and Kings 1 and 2 from the Bible and Zuo Zhuan 左传 (The Commentary of Zuo) are parallels in historical and literary development, even without any direct or indirect contact between approximately 1050–586 BCE in ancient Israel and Judah, and the Chunqiu Period (722–481 BCE) in China. They are two of the three oldest “narrative histories” (the Hebrew Deuteronomistic written in the 6th cent. BCE, The Histories in the 5th cent. BCE, and Zuo Zhuan from the 4th cent. BCE). This paper analyzes these two “histories” from the similar and different “sacred continua” in Israel, Judah and China; and also from the “divine kingship,” the “mandate of Heaven,” “theocracy,” the concept of God among ancient Hebrews and the concurrent concept of Shangdi 上帝, Di 帝 or Tian 天 and ethical principles among the Chinese. Shenbao, June 5, 1920.
Following the Industrial Revolution in Europe and America, the market was flooded with manufacturing goods. To promote sales, the department store that stressed a “low profit, high volume” model appeared in Shanghai. Sellers lowered prices to encourage purchases, and used rapid and high volume turnover to make up for lower profits. To speed up turnover, department stores invented various devices to increase sales, including intensive media advertising, open and comfortable store spaces, and free and attentive services. The new sales philosophy and tactics not only brought about a breakthrough in the retailing, but also reshaped consumer life and urban culture. The Shanghai department store evinced the social and cultural meaning of consumption in its building and inner design, its application of new technology, and its promotional activities and products display. The answer is undoubtedly affirmative. So far as the important changes in 19th century China are concerned, some case studies in regional social history have presented a picture of greater complexity and diversity. The Ningbo case, for example, shows that when a port that has had a history of foreign trade becomes embroiled in conflict between Chinese and foreigners, this conflict may simply become one mode of interaction amongst many between Chinese and foreigners. The case of Turmot is an important turning point in Chinese history, since it marks the reversal of 2 000 years of frequent attempts by nomadic tribes to expand southward. This trend is completely reversed by the Han nationalities’ northward immigration and reclamation, a development as significant as the Western invasion of China in terms of consequent social transformations. These historical traces revealed from within regions deepen our comprehension of these social transformations; consequently, such studies in social history may manage to provide answers different from those offered by the traditional model of political history.
Chinese society in the 19th century from multiple time-space perspectives: Case studies in regional social history
10.1007/s11462-009-0013-z","https://brill.com/view/journals/fphc/4/3/article-p323_1.xml",[634
"c3d2e53b-fd75-4be9-bfb8-dc9c84aefd86",[432],[638
"eecbe151-d43b-4054-82cc-1c8013d349f9","2024-02-09T07:12:22.310+00:00",[
College of History, Beijing Normal University, Beijing, China
Shiyu Zhao
[
[],[],[659,666
[
[90,91],[94
[
[70],[74
i10Index":21,"i10IndexLast5Year":21
"hindexLast5Year":107
},{"2006":100,"2007":101,"2008":101,"2009":102,"2010":103,"2011":104},{"2008":107,"2009":54,"2010":108,"2011":43},{"2008":111,"2009":112,"2010":113,"2011":114
"323-339
"3aa30c24-eef2-4623-86fe-90c9ff359a45","2024-02-18T11:03:16.436+00:00","2024-12-11T23:04:26.601+00:00",[],"-Family-building-in-inner-quarters-Conjugal-relationship-in-Tang-families
"Bai Juyi 白居易. Yet most researches on conjugal relationship have tended to focus on the arrangement of marriage, disregarding marital life after wedding. It is the general impression that matrimonial relation follows the ethics of Confucian doctrine of “the husband as principle of the wife,” or relevant code of laws like “Seven Outs,” edited according to these principles. There are three factors that contribute to marital relationship in the Tang Dynasty: ideology, ethics, and written laws. Although written laws are influenced by Confucian ideology, and hence following Confucian system of manners, on the practical level, ordinance still appears as the most reliable source to analyze familial relationships. People in the Tang Dynasty stress family status when they marry wives, yet when marrying concubines, versatility is of interest. Whereas records in official history documents and epitaphs are not entirely accountable, the complicated relationships between husband and wife, husband and concubine, and that between wife and concubine need to be further illustrated.
“Family building in inner quarters”: Conjugal relationship in Tang families
10.1007/s11462-009-0001-3","2024-12-11T23:04:26.600+00:00","https://brill.com/view/journals/fhic/4/1/article-p1_1.xml",[700
"f8b47d62-9690-48f9-8990-62697aaea493",[432],[704
"af2f2aa7-c919-4418-801a-7712b5eb631e","2024-02-18T11:03:16.455+00:00",[
Department of History, Tsinghua University, Beijing, China
Guogang Zhang
[
[],[],[725,732
[
[90,91],[94
[
[70],[74
i10Index":21,"i10IndexLast5Year":21
"hindexLast5Year":107
},{"2006":100,"2007":101,"2008":101,"2009":102,"2010":103,"2011":104},{"2008":107,"2009":54,"2010":108,"2011":43},{"2008":111,"2009":112,"2010":113,"2011":114
"1-38","2009-01-27
"436566bb-b5d3-4bbb-a76e-048bb735e439","2024-01-27T23:33:38.036+00:00","2025-02-03T22:58:45.790+00:00",[],"Yangjiao-or-the-Other-Christianity-and-Chinese-society-in-the-second-half-of-the-nineteenth-century
"Huang Zhen 黄贞, «十二深慨序», «破邪集», 卷6, 日本: 安政2年(1855)翻刻本。
citation_title=中国官绅反教的原因; citation_publication_date=1973; citation_id=CR2; citation_author=S. The first part shows how Christian churches broke the dominance of the Qing government over local society. Conflicts between Christianity and Chinese religion were often transformed into political confrontations between churches and the Qing bureaucracy. The second part analyzes how Confucianism, Buddhism, and Daoism interpreted Christianity, with an emphasis on how to understand the perception of Christianity in Chinese society. Exploring broader societal perceptions of Christianity—and not just those expressed in the writings of the Confucian literati—allows for a more nuanced understanding of Chinese interpretations of Christianity. The third part studies the relationship between churches and Chinese religious sects. On the one hand, in the language of anti-Christian movements such as those of the Zaili and Cai sects, Christianity was the hateful “Other.” On the other hand, in the process of preaching Christianity, churches themselves experienced a period of transmutation: they recruited into the church not only non-religious civilians but also the followers of popular religions. For a long period, Christianity was called yangjiao, the “foreign religion,” making it the “Other.” Missionaries started to feel an urgency to reject their identity as the “Other” after the harrowing experience of the Boxer Movement.
Yangjiao or the “Other”? To challenge such a simplistic and somewhat misleading interpretation, this article reappraises the late Qianlong era by examining the dramatic combination of social protest which largely defined this period. It focuses on the structural and conjunctural origins of these upheavals and uses them as a prism to investigate the changing state-society relationship. This study conceptualizes the late Qianlong upheavals as a profound crisis of an overextended empire whose political development had become unsustainable. In addition to facing the formidable challenges of an expanding society, the late Qianlong state was crippled by the emperor himself and his aggressive efforts to concentrate power in his own hands.
Prosperity and its discontents: Contextualizing social protest in the late Qianlong reign
10.1007/s11462-011-0133-0","2025-02-09T22:42:55.186+00:00","https://brill.com/view/journals/fhic/6/3/article-p347_2.xml",[836
"835bcfbf-c65b-45ca-b11a-07adc6edee12",[432],[840
"7bd69edb-640c-48d7-9e8c-23bc73554eb5","2024-01-17T19:17:41.484+00:00",[
Department of History, University of Hawai’i at Manoa, Honolulu, USA
Wensheng Wang
[
[],[],[861,868
[
[90,91],[94
[
[70],[74
i10Index":21,"i10IndexLast5Year":21
"hindexLast5Year":107
},{"2006":100,"2007":101,"2008":101,"2009":102,"2010":103,"2011":104},{"2008":107,"2009":54,"2010":108,"2011":43},{"2008":111,"2009":112,"2010":113,"2011":114
"347-369","2011-08-19
"97b43d46-6e64-45b3-b9a2-4f5d15746855","2024-01-09T22:42:33.003+00:00",[
"Cheng Zaoxia 程早霞. “40 niandai Meiguo de Xizang zhengce shuping” 40 年代美国的西藏政策述评 (A literature review on the U.S. policy toward Tibet in 1940s).
