we look at recent election campaigns in Europe or at the presidential elections in the United States, for example, we see that successful campaign concepts are always about voter mobilisation. Although the focus of the political debate in this regard is on the allocation of resources, the use of social media and television budgets, it is actually another question that is essential: how do we reach and target the right people? The answer to this question is as simple as it is old: face-to-face communication and personal conversation. In this respect, political parties based on a strong party structure are at an advantage: they generally possess vast databases full of contacts and further information details. However, important causes of the crisis were extraordinary and are highly unlikely to occur again. While the legacy problems of the crisis have been grave, they can be deemed temporary. Therefore, these problems should be combated pragmatically, but with temporary instruments only. A systematic analysis shows that the root causes have been tackled with a wide variety of reforms, both to the EMU itself and by way of structural reforms of the member states. In particular, evidence is presented that the adjustment capacities of the EMU countries are better than commonly recognised. Additional reforms are suggested, especially in the financial sector. With these reforms in place, future crises would have less serious effects. A reformed EMU should be able to withstand such crises without further fiscal integration.

On the future of the EMU: Is more fiscal integration indispensable?
Acharya, V., & Steffen, S. The new Bucharest Programme is based on the same principal choices and characteristics that have defined the EPP from its foundation; at the same time, it reflects the party’s broadening to include a number of new member parties and adapt to the new challenges faced by European politics, economy and society. Yet the new Platform, the result of two and a half years’ work by an ad hoc committee, should not be the end of our reflections and proposals. On the contrary, it should generate an intensive round of discussions, studies and publications on its four main elements: values, innovation, a strong Europe and vital communities. The global financial meltdown has affected and continues to affect the livelihood of almost everyone in an increasingly interconnected world. Institutions have collapsed, stock markets have plummeted and governments in even the wealthiest nations have been forced to bail out their financial systems. The author compares Finland’s economic crisis of the 1990s with that which is sending countries into disarray on a worldwide level today and establishes the reasons and possible solutions for this recession. He notes how fiscal and monetary policy measures alone cannot build a bridge over this severe recession. Moreover, he concludes by stressing that this crisis must be addressed alongside and not to the exclusion of other problems, underlining the importance of strengthening supervisory frameworks at a global and, more precisely, at EU level.","http://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1007/s12290-009-0077-7",[1388
"786bc2b9-05b5-4786-9f39-b5f36f010e5d",[917],[1392
"56cf178a-dc21-47b6-af42-7e84609dc4a8
[
Ministry of Finance, Helsinki, Finland",[
Jyrki Katainen
[
[],[],[
i10Index":32,"i10IndexLast5Year":32
"hindexLast5Year":32
},{"2008":137,"2009":130,"2010":140,"2011":134,"2012":136,"2013":134,"2014":131,"2015":128,"2016":132,"2017":122},{},{
"47-52
8","2009-05-26",2009,[
"0a90c653-4c0c-4520-aa01-3f7d63be130d","2024-02-12T15:47:03.572+00:00","2025-02-08T06:00:40.371+00:00",[],"The-Arab-Spring-and-the-challenge-of-minority-rights-will-the-Arab-revolutions-overcome-the-legacy-of-the-past-
"The blood of Egyptian Copts on the streets of central Cairo on 9 October 2011 could be accurately described as the first major set-back for the Arab Spring. Preserving the rights of minorities as full citizens in the face of long-standing persecution and neglect is a pressing challenge for the Arab revolutions. However, the dilemma of the rights of Christian minorities within the Arab world is a historical one, deeply rooted in a complex interplay of social, economic and political factors predating the Arab Spring and its unpredicted implications. The growing signs of a radical Islam empowered by the loosening grip of Arab dictatorships raise concerns that go beyond the question of security and political representation for minorities. There is a bitter race between, on the one hand, secular forces weakened both by the absence of any previous organisational cadres and by the misuse of secularism by nationalist Arab regimes and, on the other, religious forces that are pushing forcefully for further overlap between religion and the state. As the results of the first free elections in Tunisia demonstrate the popularity of Islamism in the midst of entrenched secular countries, it is clear that the battle between the two trends is an unequal one.
The Arab Spring and the challenge of minority rights: will the Arab revolutions overcome the legacy of the past?
ANSAmed (2011) Mideast: analysts, Arab Spring, Christian minority autumn. 30 September.
