A serological method could help stratify patients according to risk. The objective of this study was to test the diagnostic accuracy of a novel method for investigating IgG activity against MABSC.\u003C\u002Fjats:p>\u003Cjats:p>A prospective study of all patients attending the Copenhagen CF Centre was conducted by culturing for MABSC during a 22-month period and then screening patients with an anti-MABSC IgG ELISA. Culture-positive patients had stored serum examined for antibody kinetics before and after culture conversion.\u003C\u002Fjats:p>\u003Cjats:p>307 patients had 3480 respiratory samples cultured and were then tested with the anti-MABSC IgG ELISA. Patients with MABSC pulmonary disease had median anti-MABSC IgG levels six-fold higher than patients with no history of infection (434\u003Cjats:italic>versus\u003C\u002Fjats:italic>64 ELISA units; p&lt;0.001). The test sensitivity was 95% (95% CI 74–99%) and the specificity was 73% (95% CI 67–78%). established predictors of survival may no longer apply in the current era of cystic fibrosis (CF) care. Our objective was to identify risk factors associated with survival in a contemporary CF population.\u003C\u002Fjats:p>\u003Cjats:p>We used the Canadian CF Registry, a population-based cohort, to calculate median age of survival and summarise patient characteristics from 1990 to 2012. Clinical, demographic and geographical factors, and survival were estimated for a contemporary cohort (2000–2012) using Cox proportional hazards models.\u003C\u002Fjats:p>\u003Cjats:p>There were 5787 individuals in the registry between 1990 and 2012. Median survival age increased from 31.9 years (95% CI 28.3–35.2 years) in 1990 to 49.7 years (95% CI 46.1–52.2 years) in the most current 5-year window ending in 2012. Median forced expiratory volume in 1 s improved (p=0.04) and fewer subjects were malnourished (p&lt;0.001) over time. Malnourished patients (hazard ratio (HR) 2.1, 95% CI 1.6–2.8), those with multiple exacerbations (HR 4.5, 95% CI 3.2–6.4) and women with CF-related diabetes (HR 1.8, 95% CI 1.2–2.7) were at increased risk of death.\u003C\u002Fjats:p>\u003Cjats:p>Life expectancy in Canadians with CF is increasing. Modifiable risk factors such as malnutrition and pulmonary exacerbations are associated with an increased risk of death. Using nonbronchoscopic bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL), this study sought to compare the proportion, number, and function of AM between very young and older children. BAL fluid (BALF) leukocyte parameters were determined in 63 children, and data divided into 3 age groups: group 1 (&lt;2 yrs), group 2 (&gt; or =2-&lt; or =5 yrs) and group 3 (&gt; or =6-&lt; or =17 years). In a further subgroup of children, AM function and immune receptor expression were assessed, and data categorized into two age groups: &lt;2 yrs and &gt; or =2 yrs of age. Compared to groups 2 and 3, the AM percentage in the BAL in group 1 was significantly increased (median: 98% versus 92% and 91%), as was the albumin-adjusted AM concentration. AM from children &lt;2 yrs expressed less human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-DR (versus &gt; or =2 yrs of age), were less effective in reducing nitro blue tetrazolium, and released less interleukin (IL)-1 and tumour necrosis factor on lipopolysaccharide stimulation. There was no difference in release of IL-6, expression of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (CD54), and AM stimulation of allogeneic T-cells, between children &lt;2 yrs and &gt; or =2 yrs of age. It was concluded that the capacity of alveolar macrophage to stimulate T-cells is not enhanced in early childhood, and that immaturity of alveolar macrophage function may contribute to an increased patients with sleep apnoea\u002Fhypopnoea syndrome (SAHS) are middle-aged men. As there are conflicting data on the effects of age and gender on upper airway calibre, we tested the hypothesis that increasing age and the male sex predispose to upper airway narrowing in normal subjects. We measured upper airway calibre using acoustic reflection in 60 men and 54 women (median 35, range 16-74 yrs) both seated and supine. All upper airway dimensions, except oropharyngeal junction (OPJ), decreased with increasing age in both men and women (r &gt; -0.24, p &lt; or = 0.05) while supine (r2 &gt; 0.06). Men had greater changes in airway area at OPJ on lying down (mean (SEM) 0.5 (0.1), 0.2 (0.1) cm2; p &lt; 0.02). Men had greater body mass indices (mean (SD) 26 (4), 24 (4) kg.m-2; p = 0.04), and larger neck circumferences (mean (SD) 38 (3), 33 (2) cm; p &lt; 0.0001) than women. For any body mass index, neck circumference was larger in men than women (p &lt; 0.001).
