The importance of “work” was identified in how students positioned themselves (occupational devotion) and engaged with games technologies (technological action). This is contrasted with the emphasis on co‐creative relations and broadbrush assertions of blurring boundaries between work and non‐work.
Research limitations/implications
A larger sample of students that ranged across different digital gaming disciplines within higher education (programming; art) would add breadth and further perspectives. The common essences of the experiences of three co‐researchers are synthesized into a composite textural‐structural description of the reengineering phenomenon. The analysis of the rich, multidimensional information offered by participants reveals that reengineering projects elicit complex experiences involving a multitude of horizons. In particular, the analysis suggests that, by taking the discourse of efficiency to extremes, reeengineering ends up by unveiling the conflicts inherent in the arrangements that generally characterize workplace. This proposition goes beyond the traditional belief that the basic reason for resistance in BPR projects is the fear of layoffs or the modification of power arrangements. Indeed, such factors seem to be part of the problem. It is also necessary to understand the important role of the crisis that reeengineering may generate in individuals’ ongoing process of sense making.
On the social implications of organizational reengineering
10.1108/09593849910301612",[135],"https://www.emerald.com/insight/content/doi/10.1108/09593849910301612/full/html",[1005
"a5ad288a-474b-4e1f-a538-78083e91e840",[],[1009
"42baa87f-d67a-40ab-800b-d71a757ce949","2024-04-14T20:10:23.373+00:00",[],"The-University-of-Michigan-Business-School-Ann-Arbor-USA
The University of Michigan Business School, Ann Arbor, USA
ValterMoreno
[
[],[],[1030,1037
[
[72,73],[76
[
[90],[94,95,96
i10Index":102,"i10IndexLast5Year":18
"hindexLast5Year":102
2018":100,"2019":101},{"1994":105,"1995":105,"1996":55,"1997":106,"1998":106,"1999":55,"2000":107,"2001":107,"2002":107,"2003":102,"2004":108,"2005":109,"2006":109,"2007":55,"2008":106,"2009":106,"2010":107,"2011":110,"2012":55,"2013":102,"2017":102},{"2017":111},{"2017":111},"1999-12-01",1999,[1052,1055,1058,1061,1065,1068,1071,1074,1077,1081,1084,1087,1090,1093,1096,1100,1103,1106,1109,1112,1115,1119,1123,1127,1131,1134,1137,1140,1143,1147,1150,1153,1157,1160,1163,1166,1170,1173,1177,1180,1184,1187,1190,1193,1196,1199,1202,1205,1208,1211,1214,1217,1220,1223,1227,1231,1234,1237,1240,1243,1246,1249,1252,1255,1258,1262,1265,1268,1272,1276,1279,1282,1286,1289,1292,1296,1299,1302,1305,1309,1312,1315,1318,1322,1325
"Alvesson, M. and Willmott, H. It examines these claims in relation to the ongoing argument about embodiment and information systems. Accepts that computer mediated communication changes the nature of the interaction by removing bodily cues from the process, but argues that creating new identities is not simply a case of using new words. Argues that the choice of words is the result of socialized learning into a particular role, a process that cannot be taught explicitly. Analyses an existing case study and highlights the limitations of playing with an identity into which one has not been socialized. In‐depth interviews with both practitioners and academics give evidence of a range of socio‐cultural influences on the professional development and working lives of women IT professionals. The paper rejects the essentialist view of women and their relationship to IT that has been put forth in the information systems literature arguing, instead, the primacy of societal and structural influences. The particular contribution of this paper is a theoretical perspective of individual differences which is presented to characterize the way individual women respond in a range of specific ways to the interplay between individual characteristics and environmental influences. This perspective contributes to a better understanding of women’s involvement in the IT sector and suggests areas for proactive policy response.
Odd girl out: an individual differences perspective on women in the IT profession
10.1108/09593840210430552",[135],"https://www.emerald.com/insight/content/doi/10.1108/09593840210430552/full/html",[1847
"ffcccb25-1ef0-4ca6-af70-d7452d68624c",[],[1851
"7905e7e5-74f7-497f-88dd-d0a550b55e1f
"16ef63bd-e4ea-4bdc-b491-4341cd86c845","2024-04-17T08:26:06.151+00:00",[],"School-of-Information-Sciences-and-Technology-The-Pennsylvania-State-University-University-Park-Pennsylvania-USA
School of Information Sciences and Technology, The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pennsylvania, USA
Eileen M.Trauth
[
[],[],[1873,1880
[
[72,73],[76
[
[90],[94,95,96
i10Index":102,"i10IndexLast5Year":18
"hindexLast5Year":102
2018":100,"2019":101},{"1994":105,"1995":105,"1996":55,"1997":106,"1998":106,"1999":55,"2000":107,"2001":107,"2002":107,"2003":102,"2004":108,"2005":109,"2006":109,"2007":55,"2008":106,"2009":106,"2010":107,"2011":110,"2012":55,"2013":102,"2017":102},{"2017":111},{"2017":111
"15
98-118
2","2002-06-01",2002,[1902,1906,1909,1913,1917,1921,1924,1927,1931,1934,1937,1940,1943,1947,1950,1953,1957,1961,1964,1968,1971,1974,1978,1981,1984,1988,1992,1996,2000,2004,2007,2010,2013,2017,2020,2024,2027,2031,2034,2038,2041,2045,2048,2051,2055,2058,2061,2065,2069,2073,2077,2080,2084,2087,2090,2094
"Adam, A., Howcroft, D. and Richardson, H. The objective of this study was to improve and maintain co‐ordination between the organizations involved in the remote sensing process which evolved from a pilot phase and became operational. The study of the existing process was supported by the workflow product ActionWorkflow Analyst. Breakdowns and possible weaknesses identified in the previous process are reported. On the basis of a critical process review, the process is rationalized with an explicit visibility of customers, suppliers, organizational roles, activities and their communicative relationship. The re‐engineered process improves the service to customers in the European Commission (i.e. DG VI and Eurostat) and reduces transaction costs due to notably less customer/supplier interactions. Furthermore, there is a clear distinction between recurrent operations (done with more efficiency than in the actual process) and strategic services (with an added value to the management of ad hoc requests in the previous process). The newly designed business process has been prototyped using the workflow suite by Action Technologies. First, to provide insight into the formation of completely online small groups, paying special attention to how their work practices develop, and how they form identity. Second, to pursue conceptual development of a more multi‐level view of completely online group experience, which can be made visible through analysis of the unique interaction logging system used in this study.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors conduct a mixed methods study that integrates interviews, grounded theory analysis, case study methods and social network analysis to build a multi‐layered view of completely online group and community development.
Findings
Completely online group formation is explicated as a socio‐technical system. The paper identifies themes of tool uptake and use, and patterns of interaction that accompany group formation and development of completely online group practices. These patterns show little respect for the boundaries of space and time. It then shows how groups who are paired together for two non‐sequential activities develop a common internal structural arrangement in the second activity, and are viewable as groups in the larger course context in four of six cases.
Research limitations/implications
The time bounded nature of the group and community, combined with the educational context limit the generalizability of these findings.
Practical implications
The study shows how completely online group development can be made visible. Managers of work teams and teachers who work with classrooms in completely online contexts need to recognize the dynamic structure and interaction practices of completely online teams.
Originality/value
First, little research has been conducted on completely online group formation. Second, a conceptual understanding of how group members relate to one another and how groups interact with other groups in the same socio‐technical context is not explored in prior work. Third, the paper performs this analysis including data from rich, contextualized usage logs, which enables greater insight into online group interactivity than prior research.
Completely online group formation and development: small groups as socio‐technical systems
10.1108/09593841111137322",[135],"https://www.emerald.com/insight/content/doi/10.1108/09593841111137322/full/html",[2293,2309,2325
"9f79e2c3-bff8-4a26-8020-11ae3255d3c3",[],[2297
"9b743e80-238f-43bd-8c04-7ee0e2e51b90","2024-04-13T18:23:49.988+00:00",[],"University-of-Missouri-Columbia-School-of-Information-Science-and-Learning-Technologies-Columbia-Missouri-USA
University of Missouri – Columbia School of Information Science and Learning Technologies, Columbia, Missouri, USA
JamesLaffey
"d8bff742-a928-4a08-803c-366b5d6d88b8",[],[2313
"e92daf7a-a44a-42f8-90bb-a6e9868db0c3","2024-04-13T18:23:49.975+00:00",[],"College-of-Information-Science-and-Technology-Drexel-University-Wayne-Pennsylvania-USA
College of Information Science and Technology, Drexel University, Wayne, Pennsylvania, USA
MichaelGallagher
"eac9f9b4-7783-4e24-82b2-6570c574c46a",[],[2329
[
"Sean P.Goggins
[
[],[],[2346,2353
[
[72,73],[76
[
[90],[94,95,96
i10Index":102,"i10IndexLast5Year":18
"hindexLast5Year":102
2018":100,"2019":101},{"1994":105,"1995":105,"1996":55,"1997":106,"1998":106,"1999":55,"2000":107,"2001":107,"2002":107,"2003":102,"2004":108,"2005":109,"2006":109,"2007":55,"2008":106,"2009":106,"2010":107,"2011":110,"2012":55,"2013":102,"2017":102},{"2017":111},{"2017":111},"2011-06-07",[2367,2371,2374,2377,2381,2385,2389,2392,2396,2400,2404,2408,2412,2415,2419,2422,2426,2430,2434,2438,2442,2446,2450,2454,2457,2461,2464,2468,2472,2476,2480,2483,2487,2491,2494,2498,2502,2505,2508,2512,2516,2520,2523,2527,2530,2534,2538,2542,2546,2550,2554,2558,2562,2566,2570,2574,2577,2581,2584,2588,2592,2596,2600,2604
"Adamic, L. and Adar, E.
