The traditional application-of-theory model appears to be rather ineffective and is currently being replaced by other, more reflective approaches. However, until now the variety of different notions and assumptions underlying these new approaches have not provided a sound basis for further development. Two related theoretical bases are presented for a new paradigm in teacher education. The first uses the concepts of episteme and phronesis to introduce a new way of framing relevant knowledge. The second is a more holistic way of describing the relationship between teacher cognition and teacher behavior, leading to a model of three levels in learning about teaching, the Gestalt level, the schema level and the theory level, which are illustrated by interview data. Building on these two theoretical, frameworks, a so-called “realistic approach” to teacher education is introduced. The teacher educator's role within this approach is analyzed as well as organizational consequences. First evaluative results are presented.
","
Typically, through triangulating we expect various data sources and methods to lead to a singular proposition about the phenomenon being studied. That this is not the case is obvious to most researchers and evaluators. Given that this expectation is unrealistic, an alternative perspective of triangulation is presented. Teachers’ behavioral interactions with students can be (a) assessed observationally using standardized protocols, (b) analyzed systematically with regard to sources of error, (c) validated for predicting student learning, and (d) changed (improved) as a function of specific and aligned supports provided to teachers; exposure to such supports is predictive of greater student learning gains. In recent years, interest has grown in using classroom observation as a means to several ends, including teacher development, teacher evaluation, and impact evaluation of classroom-based interventions. Although education practitioners and researchers have developed numerous observational instruments for these purposes, many developers fail to specify important criteria regarding instrument use. In this article, the authors argue that for classroom observation to succeed in its aims, improved observational systems must be developed. These systems should include not only observational instruments but also scoring designs capable of producing reliable and cost-efficient scores and processes for rater recruitment, training, and certification. To illustrate how such a system might be developed and improved, the authors provide an empirical example that applies generalizability theory to data from a mathematics observational instrument.
When Rater Reliability Is Not Enough
10.3102/0013189x12437203",[101],"https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.3102/0013189X12437203",[1248,1267,1286
"182aae5d-c2a3-4546-8c0e-4f74f9da7a51",[],[1252
"36454c8d-5575-4b3c-9615-fb1464f7a4b4
[
Harvard Graduate School of Education, Cambridge, MA",[
"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-5181-1573
Heather C. This article argues that this assumption inevitably limits the effectiveness of such practices. Drawing on recent research into cognition as it is manifest in everyday activity, the authors argue that knowledge is situated, being in part a product of the activity, context, and culture in which it is developed and used. They discuss how this view of knowledge affects our understanding of learning, and they note that conventional schooling too often ignores the influence of school culture on what is learned in school. As an alternative to conventional practices, they propose cognitive apprenticeship (Collins, Brown, & Newman, in press), which honors the situated nature of knowledge. They examine two examples of mathematics instruction that exhibit certain key features of this approach to teaching.
","
The COVID-19 pandemic has been a seismic and ongoing disruption to K–12 schooling. Using test scores from 5.4 million U.S. students in Grades 3–8, we tracked changes in math and reading achievement across the first 2 years of the pandemic. Average math test scores in the fall of 2021 in Grades 3–8 were .20–.27 standard deviation (SD) lower relative to same-grade peers in the fall of 2019, while reading test scores decreased by .09–.18 SD. Achievement gaps between students in low-poverty and high-poverty elementary schools grew by .10–.20 SD, primarily during the 2020–2021 school year. Achievement disparities by student race/ethnicity also widened substantively. Observed declines are more substantial than during other recent school disruptions, such as those due to natural disasters.
Test Score Patterns Across Three COVID-19-Impacted School Years
10.3102/0013189x221109178",[101],"http://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.3102/0013189X221109178",[1723,1742,1767
"9384573b-f20e-4d1a-b1ff-122090b66115",[],[1727
"3ad3061f-a862-4047-be2a-aaa8768747ff
[
NWEA, Portland, OR",[
"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2231-5228
Megan Kuhfeld
A5065664889
"4985e9e2-e0ee-4337-8769-7a4c0568b5c9",[],[1746,1752
[
3fa24d04-1dff-4eea-9544-750434e0bf73
[
University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Va",[
"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-8895-2871
James Soland
A5017440940
"74fd6f9d-913e-40aa-865a-dfb7a7acd426",[],[1771
[
Karyn Lewis
A5003983573
[
[1791
[
},[1796
[
],[1802,1809
[
[54],[58
[
[72,73],[76
"7
500-506
51",126
2022,{"2022":1827,"2023":1828,"2024":1829},14,52,55,"2022-10-01",[72,59],[1833,1836,1839,1842,1845,1848,1851,1854,1857,1860,1863,1866,1869,1872,1875,1878,1881,1884,1887,1890,1893,1896,1899
"10.3102/0013189X211011237
"Barnum M. I address this question by focusing on inclusion, namely, organizational strategies and practices that promote meaningful social and academic interactions among students who differ in their experiences, views, and traits. After illustrating the contours and pace of diversification, I discuss challenges to achieving meaningful integration as campuses become more racially diverse by focusing on ethnic programming and evidence about students’ social interaction patterns. Integration is not an automatic by-product of campus diversity; therefore, to harness the benefits of diverse student bodies, institutional leaders must pursue deliberate strategies that promote inclusion.
Diversity ≠ Inclusion
26269658
10.3102/0013189x13516164","2024-10-16T08:47:36.149+00:00",[101],"https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.3102/0013189X13516164",[2224
"e400f876-812d-43f8-8cd2-db33f3888d47",[],[2228
"ca4882fe-665a-492f-b2f0-482f8d26451a
[
#N# 1Princeton University, Princeton, NJ",[
"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9660-8616
Marta Tienda
A5031959946
[
[2252
[
},[2257
[
],[2263,2270
[
[54],[58
[
[72,73],[76
"9
467-475
42",145
2013,{"2014":1288,"2015":165,"2016":165,"2017":2288,"2018":1827,"2019":298,"2020":1350,"2021":2289,"2022":2290,"2023":2290,"2024":2291},5,27,15,13,"2013-12-01",[72,59],[2295,2298,2301,2304,2307,2310,2313,2316,2319,2322,2325,2328,2331,2334,2337,2340,2343,2346,2349,2352,2355,2358,2361,2364,2367,2370,2373,2376,2379,2382,2385,2388
"Aud S., 2012, The condition of education 2012",{
"Aud S., 2010, The condition of education 2010",{
"10.2202/1553-3832.1097
"10.3102/0034654310383047
"Brown v. In doing this, we briefly review the paradigm “wars” and incompatibility thesis, we show some commonalities between quantitative and qualitative research, we explain the tenets of pragmatism, we explain the fundamental principle of mixed research and how to apply it, we provide specific sets of designs for the two major types of mixed methods research ( mixed-model designs and mixed-method designs), and, finally, we explain mixed methods research as following (recursively) an eight-step process. A key feature of mixed methods research is its methodological pluralism or eclecticism, which frequently results in superior research (compared to monomethod research). Mixed methods research will be successful as more investigators study and help advance its concepts and as they regularly practice it.
Mixed Methods Research: A Research Paradigm Whose Time Has Come
10.3102/0013189x033007014",[101],"https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.3102/0013189X033007014",[2410,2427
"4f1a7822-55be-4931-86c2-158857142d6c",[],[2414
"ae4ce611-99c8-4bbb-872e-e911c07dd436
[
University of South Alabama, College of Education, BSET, 3700 UCOM, Mobile, AL 36688;\r.
