Majer, who was professor of physiology in the Medical Faculty. The Department of Anthropology was established in 1908 and today it is one of the very few university departments in Poland that teaches and conducts research in biological anthropology. We offer a broad program for students of biology and social sciences. We offer an MSc and a PhD in Biology with a specialization in Physical Anthropology. Specialization in anthropology is very popular among biology students. Each year at least 20 students prepare graduate work (MSc degrees) in our department. In addition, at the present time 12 PhD students of Jagiellonian University are specializing in anthropology. Apart from the courses recommended for students of biology, we also offer a course for students of archeology, psychology, sociology and philosophy. Since the end of the SecondWorld War, the Department of Anthropology of Jagiellonian University has been one of the major sources of professional anthropologists in Poland. En tant que science holistique, son approche entreprend de décrire, analyser et comparer les interactions existant entre nature et culture. Elle se représente le système alimentaire dans toute sa complexité sociale et culturelle. En fait, le présent article aborde l’alimentation humaine selon un angle systémique permettant de discuter, d’ores et déjà, de l’interaction des différents facteurs qui la régissent et leur impact sur la persistance de certains déséquilibres nutritionnels. L’étude a été réalisée à Tlemcen (Algérie). Elle s’est donnée pour objectif d’identifier la culture alimentaire et sa relation avec le problème de l’obésité. Pour ce faire, un choix a été fait d’un échantillon de 100 personnes obèses (relevant des services de médecine interne du Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Tlemcen) qui ont été sélectionnées sur la base de leurs caractéristiques physiques (taille et poids) et sur la considération que l’obésité est réelle lorsque l’indice de masse corporelle est égal à 30 kg\u002Fm2 ou plus. Un formulaire spécial leur a été ainsi distribué, qui comprenait des informations sur leurs méthodes de choix alimentaires et leurs modes de nutrition. Il en ressort que l’alimentation représente un moyen privilégié d’affirmation identitaire chez l’obèse, par conservatisme de culture culinaire algérienne. De plus, avec la modernité et la venue de l’alimentation industrielle1 ce même obèse se retrouve devant une situation ambivalente, dans laquelle un espace de liberté décisionnelle se serait dégagé en même temps qu’il aurait perdu la sécurité qu’apporte un système normatif socialement défini. Tout ceci générant une anxiété constante dès lors qu’il s’agit de choix alimentaire. The aim of this study was to test each feature of the new Coimbra method for its variability, side asymmetry and its relationship with age. In addition to this, an overall relationship with age was tested for a larger sample. Males 16 and over from the Coimbra skeletal collection of historically identified individuals were recorded using the new method (N = 260). To reduce the impact of occupation, side variability in asymmetry and age were only tested in the labourers (N = 51). All occupation groups were included to test the overall relationship with age using a random forest test. The results show that scores lack variability for many of the features and entheses. Where there is side asymmetry this is typically in favour of higher scores in the right side, excepting the biceps brachii insertion. Most of the features scored show a relationship with ageing, but this is not uniform for all features or entheses. Some features are associated with an increase in age (bone formation and erosions), while others generally occur in younger individuals (fine porosity and textural change). Logistic regression showed that ageing explains at most 44% of the variability. Dans cette étude, les différences sexuelles dans la morphologie de la région basale de l’os occipital ont été mesurées dans une collection d’échantillons français à l’aide de méthodes classiques d’ostéométrie. Nos résultats démontrent qu’un niveau faible de dimorphisme sexuel est observé dans les os de la base du crâne dans la mesure où un faible nombre des variables mesurées présentent des différences significatives entre mâles et femelles. La précision d’une fonction de discrimination du sexe a été mesurée par une méthode de validation croisée sur la population d’origine et est notoirement plus faible que celle documentée dans d’autres populations. La précision maximale obtenue avec une méthode de sélection progressive est de 67,7 % pour une fonction de discrimination basée sur la longueur maximale du condyle occipital gauche et la distance minimale entre les condyles occipitaux. La meilleure fonction de discrimination univariée, basée sur la largeur de l’articulation bicondylaire, atteint une précision légèrement plus faible de 67,6 % mais avec un biais sexuel plus fort. La principale limite de ces dernières méthodes en termes de reproductibilité est incarnée par le facteur taille, connu pour être variable d’une population à l’autre. Les récents développements de la morphométrie géométrique ouvrent de nouvelles voies de recherche. Cette étude évalue le degré de dimorphisme sexuel du crâne d’une série de 50 squelettes identifiés (25 hommes et 25 femmes issus de la collection Olivier,MNHN, Paris) par le biais de la morphométrie géométrique. Cette technique autorise une séparation de la taille globale et de la conformation des crânes. Les variations de taille et de conformation ainsi identifiées sont alors statistiquement étudiées et interprétées. Notre échantillon révèle un fort dimorphisme sexuel de taille et un dimorphisme sexuel de conformation plus subtil, notamment dans la région faciale de nos individus. Ces différences entre hommes et femmes se concentrent sur l’os zygomatique, le temporal et la cavité nasale; elles sont en partie imputables à des phénomènes allométriques et biomécaniques.
