At 5 years, only one patient still followed a strict diet (versus ten at 1 year, P &amp;lt; 0·05) and only two needed antidiarrhoeal medication (versus ten at 1 year, P &amp;lt; 0·05). There were no episodes of pouchitis or late reservoir-related complications. The three groups were compared with one another in terms of complications, survival rate and patterns of recurrence.\u003C\u002Fjats:p>\n               \u003C\u002Fjats:sec>\n               \u003Cjats:sec>\n                  \u003Cjats:title>Results\u003C\u002Fjats:title>\n                  \u003Cjats:p>Severe complications did not occur at any point during adjuvant HAI or PVI chemotherapy. The 5-year disease-free survival rate of patients in the HAI, PVI and resection alone groups were 35, 13 and 9 per cent respectively, including six hospital deaths. Patients in the HAI group showed significantly improved recurrence rates in the remaining liver compared with the resection alone group (P = 0·03), and more prolonged disease-free and overall survival than those in the PVI (P = 0·01 and P = 0·02 respectively) and resection alone (P = 0·0001 and P = 0·0006 respectively) groups.\u003C\u002Fjats:p>\n               \u003C\u002Fjats:sec>\n A total of 322 consecutive patients underwent 324 gastroenterostomies; 35 experienced delayed return of gastric emptying. Regression analysis demonstrated preoperative obstruction to be the most significant factor (P &amp;lt; 0·001). Vagotomy was not an independent variable. Age, sex, size of stoma, anastomotic technique, albumin and experience of the operator were not significant factors. Gastroenterostomy in the presence of ‘gastric atony’ was likely to produce DRGE. In all, 86 per cent of cases resolved spontaneously. Only one case of DRGE was found to have a mechanical cause. Most patients were supported by parenteral nutrition but, with a knowledge of the identified risk factors, more thought could be given to establishing a route for jejunal feeding at the time of The original pathology was found to be a gastric ulcer in 22 of 28 patients whose initial operation was undertaken at St James's Hospital. This represents an incidence of at least 1 carcinoma appearing for every 76 patients undergoing partial gastrectomy for gastric ulceration. At a mean follow-up of 51 months, one patient had developed recurrent stones in the caudate lobe bile ducts at 8 months and died from acute purulent cholangitis, 17 months after surgery. Whereas 23 of the 25 tumour homogenate cell suspensions were shown to exclude trypan blue, none of the exfoliated colonic cancer cell suspensions had viable cells.
